Hoffer’s 19.3 50 Free Nears National Public School Record At AZ D2 States

2016 AZ DIVISION 2 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • Full meet results
  • Friday, November 4th – Saturday, November 5th
  • Skyline Aquatic Center, Mesa, AZ
  • Short Course Yards

Chaparral High School senior Ryan Hoffer, the #1 recruit in the class of 2017, helped lead his team to a state championship title with 2 individual event victories at the 2016 Arizona Division 2 State Championships.

Hoffer, a Cal commit, picked up his first victory in the 50 free, where he just barely missed the National Public School Record. He touched the wall in a time of 19.34, missing the record mark of 19.29 set by Caeleb Dressel, who would go on to become the American Record holder, in 2013. Hoffer has been a few tenths faster before, posting a 19.06 at 2015 Winter Juniors. However, he would’ve had to have swum that time at a high school meet for it to have counted as the record.

Following his win in the 50 free, Hoffer returned to the pool for the 100 fly. He dominated the race to pick up his 2nd win in 46.97, giving him the only sub-50 time of the field.

Note: A full recap of the division 2 meet will be posted shortly.

Would’ve loved to see an individual 100 free, but still! He was faster than last year and probably not fully tapered.

Wow. I think Hoffer’s amazing 100 free last year changed people’s perception that underwaters were slower than sprint freestyle.

Maybe US Swimming should start thinking about LCM for high school and college. We have such great SCY swimmers, but it doesn’t always transfer.

42.98 anchor on the 400 free relay? Nuts for anyone else in high school

Not so nuts when you’ve been 41.2 flat start.

I doubt he’s fully tapered/shaved for this meet

I see a 40 for relay split in his future. that’d make 42.9 seem like a petty split
