AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team kicked off the season with the annual Cardinal and Gold intrasquad meet with Gold taking ownership of the victory, 134-90. The score provided for the largest margin of victory in the last 14 intrasquad meetings while Gold grabbed nine event titles.

Sophomores swept the 200 free with Brinley Horras timing in first with 1:55.01 for Gold. Sydney Jackson (1:55.98) and Ashley Bengtson (1:56.19) touched next for Cardinal early in the meet.

Carley Caughron dominated off the blocks to provide for Gold’s fourth-consecutive event win. The freshman out of Waterloo, Iowa touched at 24.29 in the 50 free to lead into the first dive break with Gold ahead 49-25.

Joscelyn Buss dove to the top score in the combined one-meter and platform event with a score of 198.00 for Gold. Michelle Schlossmacher Smith (192.95) and Jessica Coffin (145.05) placed next to keep the fight alive for Cardinal.

Caughron continued her dominance in the next swimming event, taking first in the 100 fly with 58.03. Lucia Rizzo (58.32, Cardinal) and Trinity Gilbert (58.36, Gold) followed closely behind for second and third.

In the 100 back, Emily Haan provided for Cardinal’s first event victory, taking the win with 57.37.

Brinley Horras picked up her second top placement of the night to sweep the distance events, this time in the 500 free with 5:05.04.

On the three-meter, Schlossmacher Smith topped the boards for Cardinal with a score of 165.75 in four rounds. Three Gold members followed in placement, Jayna Misra (154.60), Joscelyn Buss (142.50) and Lauren Kimball (132.45) to take second through fourth.

The night capped off with Gold pulling ahead in the 200 free relay. The team of Brinley Horras, Gilbert, Maddie Ziegert and Carley Caughron won with 1:37.62.

“Our medley relays were much faster than I had thought they could go the way the teams were set up,” Head Coach Duane Sorenson said. “Trinity Gilbert had a big upset beating Lucia in the 200 IM with a fabulous early season time. In the 50, Carley did an outstanding job and showed how she’s going to be a real asset to our program. Emily Haan looked exceptional in the 100 back coming off of an injury. Overall, I thought lot of spirit and enthusiasm. The Gold team had a bunch of upsets of what I thought they were going to do and they ended up pulling out the win.”
