TEMPE, Ariz. – The ASU swim teams had their first chance to show their preseason preparation in competition format at the team’s annual Maroon & Gold intrasquad, a meet the gold team won, 224-157.

The gold women’s team ousted maroon, 110-71, while the men’s side told a similar story, gold topping maroon, 114-86.

“The energy was pretty good,” said head coach Bob Bowman. “We had some very good relay swims, so I’m very excited about that. I thought the freshmen swam really well, which is why we brought them here.”

Notably, had the results been during the regular season and thus official, senior and Rio Olympian Richard Bohus‘ 100-yard backstroke was .25 seconds faster than the NCAA qualifying B standard while his 50 yard free was just .01 off the B standard.

Men’s co-captain Thibaut Capitaine also swam faster than the B standard qualifier in the 100 breast (55.33).

The gold team was stacked with talent, including all three Sun Devils who represented ASU at the 2016 Olympics – Bohus, co-captain Kat Simonovic, and Anna Olasz – as well as Capitaine and touted newcomer, Cameron Craig, who Bowman was impressed with for a first meet.

“He swam five events, which you couldn’t do in a normal meet, but he swam at a very high level in all of them. I’m very pleased.”

Simonovic’s fellow co-captain Alysha Bush represented the maroon squad, touching the wall first in a hotly contested 100-yard freestyle.

The Sun Devils have another two weeks to prepare before their first regular season weekend, back-to-back meets at Utah (Oct. 21) and BYU (Oct. 22). They return home for their regular season home opener vs. Denver on Oct. 29 at 12 noon.
