Georgia Southern Defeats Gardner-Webb on the Road, Walks Away with Two Pool Records

The Eagles of Georgia Southern University upended the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs, 144.5 to 112.5, in Boiling Springs, North Carolina over the weekend. Full results available here.

The meet began with a close 200 medley relay. Christina Moran, Amber Cortazzo, Megan Heller, and Elaina Lanson of Georgia Southern out-touched Susie Ward, Charity Byrum, Mary O’Doherty, and Kelsey Williams of Gardner-Webb, 1:49.29 to 1:50.01 for the win.

The home team had strong performances from Lauren Oglesby and Byrum, among others. Oglesby put the Runnin’ Bulldogs on the scoreboard first, winning the 1000 free in 10:35.30. She later clocked a 5:11.43 to take second in the 500. Teammate Byrum captured both the 100 and 200 breast titles, touching in 1:06.36 and 2:27.28, and placed third in the 50 free with 25.12.

Lili Toth was an asset for Gardner-Webb with her second-place finish in the 200 breast, just .49 behind Byrum in 2:27.77, her third in the 100 free (53.10) and a fourth in the 200 free (1:58.52).

The visiting Eagles posted wins in 7 individual events. Highlights of the day included several 1-2-3 sweeps and two pool records. The two converged in the 200 back when Moran led a trio of Eagles to the finish and established a pool record with her time of 2:05.07. Lauren Campbell (2:08.88) and Sarah Schwartz (2:10.21) finished second and third. Moran doubled up with a win in the 100 back as well (58.83). This time second place went to Schwartz (1:00.95), in front of Gardner-Webb’s April Niccolai.

Three events earlier Campbell had set a new pool mark in the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.38. Teammate Cortazzo was second in that race, and the Runnin’ Bulldogs Cjay Wiley, third. Cortazzo picked up two more silver medals, touching second in the 200 free and 100 fly.

The 200 free was another 1-2-3 finish for the Eagles as Kylee Parsons led the way in 1:55.41. After Cortazzo’s 1:56.29, teammate Kaylyn Thomas finished third in 1:58.25. Parsons scored another win in the 500 free, hitting the wall in 5:09.91.

Sprinter Lanson gave Georgia Southern a pair of victories, clocking a 23.76 in the 50 free and 52.27 in the 100. Gardner-Webb’s O’Doherty (24.55) was runner-up in the 50 free while Parsons (52.87) placed second in the 100.
