Another pair of NCAA swimmers have received their Universality invites to the 2012 London Summer Olympics.
Esau Simpson from Nova Southeastern in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida will head to the Games representing his home country of Grenada in the southern Carribean. He’s a sprint freestyler, with a 100 freestyle best of 53.85 from last year’s World Championships in Shanghai.
The junior is a Division II All-American for the sharks, and had a great performance at NCAA’s in the 400 free relay where he split 44.4 and 44.7 on their 400 free relays (in prelims and finals).
Georgia Tech also learned that they will have an Olympian this week, as Andrew Chetcuti received his bid to represent Malta in London. Chetcuti is his country’s superstar swimmer, and will also enter the 100 free with his 51.98 from last year’s Small States of Europe Championships.
Last year as a freshman he made the C-Final at the ACC Championships in both the 50 and 100 freestyles; combined with classmates Andrew Kosic, Nico van Duijn, and sophomore Jacob Johnson, the Ramblin’ Wreck has a strong young sprinting nucleus, and Chetcuti’s Olympic bid will add a valuable level of experience to that lineup.
