FINA Announces Qualifying Standards, Procedures for 2022 World Championships

FINA has revealed the qualification procedures for the newly inserted 2022 World Aquatics Championships set for Budapest.

Slated for June 18th – July 3rd, the competition in Budapest was added to the calendar in response to the originally-scheduled 2022 FINA World Aquatics Championships for Fukuoka, Japan moving to 2023.

Per FINA‘s announcement today, the qualification procedure for Budapest 2022 will adapt the already established pathway for Fukuoka. the only difference is that the qualification deadline has been extended to May 15th. This is an extension of 15 days.

This means that the 2022 Southeast Asia Games could now potentially serve as a qualification meet, with that competition set for May 5th – May 16th. The Mare Nostrum Tour, on the other hand, recently bumped its dates from June to May but still fall outside the May 15th deadline.

Revised 2022 Mare Nostrum Dates:

  • MONACO 21/22 May 2022
  • BARCELONA 25/26 May 2022
  • CANET EN ROUSSILLON 28/29 May 2022

Additionally, all FINA-approved qualifying events for Fukuoka 2022 are automatically considered as the qualifying events for the 19th FINA World Championships.

As such, the qualification times also remain the same between what was originally established for Fukouka 2023 and Budapest 2022, as seen at the bottom of this post.

As a reminder, Fukuoka’s, and thus Budapest’s, qualifying standards were derived from a mix of the 2019 World Championships qualifying standards and the time of the 16th place finisher at those championships, with the faster of the two times being selected.

This differs from previous years, where all of the time standards were based on the 16th place finisher’s time at the previous championships. In addition, all countries automatically can enter one relay team per relay event into the meet.
