Area Tallahassee’s Ethan Ekk continued his reign on the final day of the Florida Swimming Spring Senior Championships, completing the sweep of his individual events. After winning the 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle on Saturday, the 17-year-old Stanford commit flexed his range in both disciplines, winning the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke.
Ekk controlled both events, winning the 100 freestyle by .74 seconds and the 200 backstroke by 3.37. He swam lifetime bests in both, improving from times he swam last fall. The 100 freestyle was his first event and he swam 43.59, dropping 1.11 seconds from the lifetime best he swam at the FHSAA Class 3A State Championships in November. Then, he clocked 1:41.39 in the 200 backstroke, improving from the 1:42.41 he swam at the Winter Junior Championships — East.
Ekk competes for Canada internationally, but his 200 backstroke time would rank 42nd among American 17-18 boys in history.
15-year-old Brinkleigh Hansen also completed a strong meet on Sunday evening. She didn’t win all her individual events but she did sweep the girls’ distance freestyle races. After opening the meet with a 9:43.00 in the 1000 freestyle and clocking 4:45.30 in the 500 freestyle, Hansen won the 1650 freestyle with a 16:18.11, dropping 8.98 seconds from her swim at the Winter Junior Championships — East.
Hansen’s teammate Isabella Dieffenthaller picked up a win in the girls’ 100 freestyle with a lifetime best 49.15. It was the Brown commit’s first win of the weekend after placing second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle.
The Sarasota Sharks won the girls’ side of the meet handily, beating Laker Swim by over 200 points. The team picked up three more wins on the final day of the meet as Jessica Robie won the 200 butterfly (2:01.64), Madyson Hartway the 100 breaststroke (1:01.57), and Maeve Eckerman the 200 backstroke (1:56.07).
Eckerman’s swim in the 200 backstroke is her first personal best in the event in over two years. Her time finally broke through the 1:56.84 she clocked at Winter Juniors in 2022.
Finally, Arianna Wertheim won the 50 backstroke in 25.26.
Back on the boys’s side, the Bolles School picked up another two event wins as they wrapped up a dominant performance in the team standings. Lucas Young, a junior committed to Michigan, won the 100 breaststroke in alifetime best 54.18. Later, 16-year-old Clay Magyar shattered his lifetime best in the 1650 freestyle. He came into the meet with a lifetime best 15:25.40 from December, then broke 15:20 for the first time with a 15:18.95.
The 50 backstroke and 200 butterfly were two of the closest races of the session. First, Laker Swim’s Mahmoud Morsy edged out his teammate Martin Montavlo by .12 seconds to win the 50 backstroke, 23.00 to 23.12.
Then, Grant Sanders held off late charges from teenagers Bogdan Zverev and Roberto Sebastian Zarate in the 200 butterfly. The 27-year-old won the race in 1:45.58, while Zverev and Zarate tied at 1:45.80. The latter closed in 28.18, second only to fourth-place Thomas Matheson’s 27.84 final split (1:46.56).
