Emory Defeats Savannah College

The Emory University Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams each earned their second-straight victories on Friday afternoon, with both squads defeating the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in dual meet action at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

The Emory men picked up a 99-77 win over the Bees, while the women claimed a 120-79 victory.  With the wins, both the Emory men and women improved to 2-1 on the season.  The SCAD men dropped to 0-2 on the year with the loss, while the women fell to 0-3.

Emory swimmers combined for four NCAA ‘B’ cut times during the meet.  For the women, senior Brooke Woodward recorded her first provisional time of the season, finishing second in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:32.98.  The other three ‘B’ cuts each came in the 100-yard breaststroke, with freshman Annelise Kowalsky and senior Kylie McKenzie finishing first and second in the women’s event with times of 1:04.66 and 1:05.46, respectively, while sophomore Andrew Wilson won the men’s event with a mark of 57.66 seconds.

Overall the Eagles finished first in 17 of the 22 events on Friday, with the men winning eight events and the women nine. Individual first-place finishers for the men included freshman Mitchell Cooper 500-yard freestyle and 1,000-yard freestyle, senior Ross Spock in the 50-yard freestyle, senior Jake Stephens in the 400-yard individual medley, and senior Matt O’Brien in the 100-yard butterfly, while additional individual first-place finishers for the women included junior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, junior Nancy Larson in the 200-yard freestyle, freshman Claire Liu in the 50-yard freestyle, junior Nina Zook in the 100-yard butterfly and senior Sadie Nennig in the 100-yard backstroke.

Emory also swept all four relays during the day.  For the men, the combination of Spock, Wilson, O’Brien and senior Ryan Bass won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:34.48, while Stephens, sophomore Matt Kuhlik, Bass and freshman John Michael Roberts won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a mark of 1:25.79.  For the women, sophomore Ellie Thompson, Kowalsky, freshman Kristine Rosenberger and Liu claimed a victory in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:47.12, while freshmanMarissa Bergh, senior Suzanne Lemberg, junior Dana Holt and Larson won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.00.

The Eagles will return to action next Friday, November 15th at 5:00 PM, when the squads will travel to Athens, Georgia to face the University of Georgia, an NCAA Division I and Southeastern Conference program.
