Canadian swimmer Emily Overholt has decided to defer her acceptance to the University of British Columbia and their varsity swim team in order to focus on the 2016 Olympic Games.
Overholt was accepted to study science at UBC, and will be a huge component to their already top-quality varsity squad. The UBC Thunderbirds won both the men’s and women’s CIS Championships this year, and Overholt’s talents will likely help them maintain their success for years to come.
When Overholt joins the team in the fall of 2016, she’ll have plenty of great training partners such as Erika Seltrenreich-Hodgson in the IMs. UBC’s womens team is going to lose huge numbers next season, so Overholt will be joining the squad at a very opportune time.
As for training, Overholt is already very familiar with what goes on at UBC. She’s currently training at the high performance centre in Vancouver which is paired up with the university. She has some of Canada’s top coaches such as Tom Johnson and Steve Price at her disposal.
Overholt qualified this April to swim at both the 2015 Pan Am Games which will be held in Canada, and the 2015 World Championships. Overholt was one of the few swimmers who managed to dip under the ‘top 16’ standard that was put into place as the qualifying time for the Canadian worlds squad.
At the meet, she won the 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, and placed second in the 400m IM.
She is currently training at the high performance summer in preparation for the two international meets this summer.
