Dustin Tynes Breaks Bahamian Record, Hits Olympic “B” Standard

Bahamian breaststroker Dustin Tynes has broken his 2nd National Record of the week at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, and earned his first Olympic “B” standard.

In the 100 meter breaststroke B-Final, Tynes swam 1:02.49 to break his old Bahamian Record of 1:02.97 that was done at last year’s Youth Olympic Games. In the process, he ducked under the 1:02.69 FINA “B” standard, which means that if he is the fastest swimmer in that event in the Bahamas, he is entitled to a spot at the Olympic Games from FINA’s perspective.

While he has hit the standard, each country is able to make it’s own standards for Olympic qualification (presuming they’re equal to or tougher than those set by FINA), so Tynes will still have to convince the Bahamian Federation of his worth for an Olympic bid.

Tynes, who attended high school in the United States at The Baylor School in Tennessee, will be a sophomore next fall at Ohio State.

Earlier in the meet, Tynes also broke the Bahamian Record in the 200 breaststroke, though his 2:18.13 was short of the Olympic standard.
