Dixie State Women Close 2021-22 Home Slate With Dual Win Over Idaho

Dixie State swimming collected nine event wins on its way to a 147-115 dual victory over WAC opponent Idaho in the Trailblazers’ final home meet of the 2021-22 season on Saturday afternoon at the DSU HPC Pool.

Freshman Paulina Sansores accounted for three of DSU’s race victories, touching the wall first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:33.58; #4 all-time at DSU), the 500 free (5:11.43) and in the 200 IM (2:10.39).

Meanwhile junior Kyrie Nicolds, swimming in her final home meet, won both the 50 free (24.64) and the 100 free (53.77) sprint races, while sophomore Akalia Bostock claimed victory in the 200 free (1:54.93). Fellow sophomore Skyler Lyon also picked up an individual event win in the 100 breast (1:05.31).

In addition, the Trailblazers swept both the relay races, starting with the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:47.31, while the 400 free relay team closed the meet with an event-winning time of 3:34.36.

Dixie State will wrap up the 2021-22 regular season on Saturday, Feb. 12, when the Blazers travel to Las Vegas to swim at the UNLV First Chance Invite. That meet will serve as the final tune-up before the 2022 Western Athletic Conference Swim and Dive Championships, which will be held on Feb. 23-26, in Houston, Texas.

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Idaho swimming and diving team dropped its final conference meet of the season, 147-115 in a matchup against Dixie State on Saturday afternoon.

The Vandals won five of the 14 events in the dual meet against the Trailblazers. Dixie State started the day by winning the first three events and capped off the meet by earning wins in the final two events.

Junior Kaling Phung got the Vandals going with a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.21. Two events later, Bindi Pedersen earned nine points for Idaho after clocking in at 2:10.51 in the 200-yard butterfly for the top spot.

Idaho had back-to-back first-place finishes after another impressive effort from Phung in the 200-yard backstroke, where she fended off Dixie State’s Ally Boynton (2:08.73) with a finish in 2:07.59. Laura Rogriguez-Fernandez clocked in at 2:21.27 in the 200-yard breaststroke to add nine points to Idaho’s team score.

Phung capped off her weekend with three individual wins on the day, earning first in the 100-yard butterfly in 59.21 that featured a battle with teammate Bindi Pedersen who followed right behind in 59.92 for a runner up finish.

NEXT UP: Idaho will host their final home meets of the season when they welcome the College of Idaho on Feb. 12 and Ottowa on Feb. 13.
