NEWARK, Del. – The Delaware women’s swimming & diving program picked up its first dual meet win of the season against West Chester at the Harry W. Rawstorm Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building on Friday.
The Blue Hens had 180 points compared to West Chester’s 63.
NCAA ZONE CUTS
- Alex Pastris and Julia Servas earned NCAA diving zone cuts in the 3-meter dive. Pastris won the event with a final score of 297.23, Servas finished second at 291.68
RESULTS
The following athletes won their respective events:
- Erin Shema, Mania Tasakou, Aislinn Mitchell and Nicole Chiappa in the 200 medley relay (1:46.00).
- Lauren Hartel in the 500 free (5:06.72) and 1000 free (10:18.63).
- Anthi Lyra in the 100 free (52.78 seconds) and 200 free (1:52.83)
- Mitchell in the 100 fly (57.21 seconds).
- Sara Smith in the 100 backstroke (58.71 seconds).
- Tasakou in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.51).
- The 400 freestyle relay team of Mitchell, Lyra, Olivia Willemsen and Chiappia (3:31.33)
- Servas in the 1-meter dive (274.73 final score)

- Friday’s meet was the last event of the 2023 calendar year for Delaware. The Blue Hens return to the Harry W. Rawstorm Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building and kick off the new year with a dual meet against Costal Athletic Association conference foe Drexel on Saturday, Jan. 6. The meet kicks off at noon.

The following athletes earned first place in their respective events:
- Gavin Currie, Toni Sabev, Simeon Sabev, and Matvei Namakonov in the 200-medley relay (1:30.48).
- Namakonov in the 50 free (21.03 seconds).
- Jack Hattery in the 200 IM (1:53.59).
- Simeon Sabev in the 100 fly (49.64 seconds).
- Currie in the 100 backstroke (50.18 seconds).
- Toni Sabev in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.28 seconds).
- The 400 freestyle relay team of Miguel Vasquez, Simeon Sabev, Andrew Taylor and Addison Collins (3:05.71)
- Kevin Siegfried in the 1-meter dive (272.25 final score).
- Philip Townsend in the 3-meter dive (295.58 final score

NEWARK, Del. – Paul Demesy (Saint Ulrich, France) won both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500 free, to pace West Chester University’s men’s swim team at Delaware Friday.
West Chester dropped the meet, 153-90, however, head coach Steve Mazurek was pleased with where the team’s times are right now.
“I’m really pleased with how they are swimming right now,” Mazurek commented. “Given the time of year, their times are right where they need to be. There is plenty to work on, but more to be excited about.”
Demesy touched the wall first in the 1000 free in 9 minutes, 32.36 seconds with teammate Jacob Texter (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) right behind in second in 9:53.14. Demesy and Daniel Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) were first and second, respectively, in the 500 free. Demesy touched out in 4:38.14, just ahead of Dunigan’s 4:38.41. Dunigan picked up one of West Chester’s four wins on the afternoon in the 200 free. His time of 1:43.22 paced the field. Devin Metzger (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) won the 100 free in 45.96.
Metzger was also runner-up in the 50 free with teammate Nolan Benner (Green Lane, Pa./Boyertown) right behind him in third. Benner was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.61.
Breyden Wright (Georgetown, Del./Sussex Central) turned in a nice performance in the 100 butterfly. The First State native was runner-up with a time of 50.83. West Chester also took second and third in the 100 backstroke. Dalton Fink (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) took runner-up honors with a time of 51.15 while Chad Corson (Wernersville, Pa./Wilson) was third in 53.51.
Off the boards, Tyler Czeiner (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) was fourth off the 3-meter springboard while Boden Burkhart (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton) was fourth on the 1m board.
“The divers have been improving steadily all season,” WCU diving coach Steve Kuttruff said. “I am encouraged by their growth. I think this sets them up nicely for tomorrow’s 11-dive meet at The College of New Jersey.”
The divers travel to TCNJ for a 2 p.m. meet on Saturday. The swimmers are off until their trip south to Ft. Pierce, Fla. on January 12.
