Dartmouth Kicks Off 2025 With Sweep of Division III Bates

LEWISTON, Maine – Samantha Li led the Dartmouth women’s swimming and diving team to a win over Bates College on Saturday afternoon, 151-53. Li was one swimmer of four that set a pool record in the meet. The Big Green women won every single event of the meet over the Bobcats.

“Our first meet of 2025 was a success! In our first weekend back to campus from our time at home, we brought energy and rewrote some Bates pool records. It was great seeing so many lone pine celebrations; We’re so proud of the women for winning every event! We’re excited for next weekend when we travel to Yale! Go Big Green!” said Captain Sophie Wiener.

Li set the Tarbell Pool record with her time of 51.33 in the 100 free. She also set a pool record her leg of the 200 free relay, swimming a time of 23.69 in the leadoff 50. The relay team of Li, Maddie BlackwellElizabeth Ann Stromberger and Lane Murray set a pool record with a time of 1:35.97.

The 400 medley relay of Maria Uranga, KatherineJia, Murray, and Li set a new pool record after swimming a 3:51.11 in the event.

Jia, Izzy Mundee and Wiener went 1-2-3 in the 200 Free with Jia swimming a 1:55.42, Mundee going for a 1:55.64 and Wiener swimming a 1:59.96.

Blackwell, Lindsey Drumm, and Stromberger went 1-2-3 in the 50 Free with times of 24.36, 25.01, and 25.28, respectfully.

Murray placed first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:07.74, setting a new lifetime best time.

Jia set a pool record in the 200 breast, 2:17.26, also going a season best time that is roughly only one second off her lifetime best time from Ivy Championships last season.

The Dartmouth women’s swim and dive team is back in the pool when they travel to Yale on Friday, Jan. 10 and Saturday, Jan. 11 with the divers competing on Friday and the swimmers competing on Saturday.

LEWISTON, Maine – Tommy Erwin won both his individual events and set a pool record as the Dartmouth men’s swimming and diving team took down Bates College on Saturday afternoon, 132-73. Two additional performances set Tarbell Pool records for the Big Green in the meet.

“We had a great day at Bates today. It’s always a fun meet to get back into the swing of competing after break, and we definitely came out swinging today. We had several pool records, a bunch of event wins, some personal and season bests today—definitely a good meet to have leading into the rest of Ivy League competition,” said Captain Aryeh Lesch.

Tommy Erwin set a pool record in the 1000 free while also going a season best time, 9:30.75. Jacob Turner also set a pool record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.15.

Xavier OrlicReed Wallace, and Ronan Fahey went 1-2-3 in the 500 free with Orlic swimming a 4:44.93, Wallace going for a 4:48.77 and Fahey recording a 4:49.14.

McCoy Lyman made his college diving debut this afternoon and recorded a score of 258.75 on the 3 meter. Everett Tai’s score of 339.30 on then 3 meter ranks him 10th on Dartmouth’s All-Time Top-10 performers list.

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates swimming and diving program welcomed NCAA Division I opponent Dartmouth to town on Saturday, giving the Big Green a run for their money in a dual meet at Tarbell Pool.

The Dartmouth men’s team tallied 132 points to Bates’ 73 points, while the Big Green women’s squad outscored the Bobcats by a count of 151-53.

“The scores aren’t nearly as close as the meet felt,” Bates head coach Peter Casares said. “There were lots of close races for first, second, and third – and the coaching staff couldn’t have asked for a better start to the winter semester.”

Bates Men’s Highlights

  • The Bobcats opened the meet with a bang, winning the 400-yard medley relay in a Tarbell Pool record time of 3:21.79. Sophomore Tim Johnson (Brewster, Mass.), junior Marrich Somridhivej (South Windsor, Conn.), first-year Nate Oppenheim (Easton, Conn.), and sophomore John Weigel (Iowa City, Iowa) teamed up to earn the victory, winning by less than a second over the Dartmouth “A” relay team, which touched the wall in 3:22.51.
  • Weigel showed off his ability in the 200-yard freestyle, winning the race in 1:40.67. He out-touched his brother Isaac Weigel — who swims for Dartmouth — by the slimmest of margins, as Isaac Weigel finished the race in 1:40.68.
  • Junior Max Cory (Dublin, Calif.) returned from abroad in style with a win in the 50-yard freestyle. Cory raced to the finish in 20.74 seconds, earning a convincing victory over runner-up Alexander Le of Dartmouth, who touched the wall in 21.37 seconds.
  • First-year Anton Kondratyev (Belle Mead, N.J.) was the runner-up in the 1,000-yard freestyle, racing to the finish in 9:55.80.
  • Sophomore Liam Friedlander (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned runner-up honors in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:53.49.
  • Cory was the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.15 seconds.
  • Johnson took second place in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:50.54.

Bates Women’s Highlights

  • Senior captain Stephanie Tropper (Solon, Ohio) was the runner-up in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:45.57 and sophomore Cora Zuwallack (East Falmouth, Mass.) finished third in 10:58.35.
  • First-year Kendall Keshen (Santa Barbara, Calif.) took second place in the 200-yard IM in 2:13.94.
  • Junior Emma Burke (New Hartford, N.Y.) finished second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:08.95.
  • Sophomore Sarah Palmer (Brunswick, Maine) placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:25.23.
  • First-year Taylor Rolefson (Piedmont, Calif.) took third in the 100-yard freestyle in 57.05 seconds.
  • First-year Erin Barisonek (New Vernon, N.J.) placed third in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:14.33.
  • Tropper took third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:14.90.
  • Sophomore Amber Zeng (South Windsor, Conn.), Keshen, Burke, and Tropper teamed up to place second in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:41.81.

The Bobcats are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 12 when they host Middlebury in a dual meet at Tarbell Pool.

Excited to see the coverage and the resilience of the Dartmouth programs. Goodness knows they have been through a lot (aborted team cut, followed by some coaching turnover). Coach Socha and the team seem to be doing a great job rebuilding.

Kudos also to Bates for the strong swims against a D1 program.
