The 19 year-old Daiya Seto of Japan will surely remember his first major international long-course swimming medal fondly. Seto beat out another youngster, American Chase Kalisz, for the victory, posting a 4:08.69 in the final. Kalisz took home his first international medal as well, a silver, with his 4:09.22 performance. Veteran Brazilian Thiago Pereira snagged his usual bronze medal dipping under 4:10 with a 4:09.48.
Seto’s countryman Kosuke Hagino‘s long week of racing caught up to him in the last 50. Hagino led all the way to the 350m mark until the field dropped the hammer on Hagino and left him behind in fifth as he could only muster a 30.94 final 50m split for a final time of 4:10.77. Tyler Clary, who has had a rough post-Olympic year snuck in ahead of Hagino at 4:10.39.
