Coughlin Takes Over SwimSquad Lead After Day 2 In Mesa

2018 TYR PRO SWIM SERIES – MESA

Team Coughlin got points from all five starters on day 2 in Mesa, surging to the points lead by 10 with one day of point-scoring remaining.

Running Points
CoughlinSquad 65
LezakSquad 55
KrayzelburgSquad 49
SandenoSquad 43

Coughlin was tied for dead last among the four teams after day 1, but surged back on the second day behind wins from Ryan Murphy (100 back), Molly Hannis (100 breast), Hali Flickinger (200 fly) and Melanie Margalis (200 IM). Coughlin’s team won a third of the night’s 12 events, and also got points from runner-up Michael Chadwick in the 100 free.

Coughlin isn’t starting an IMer, which will cut down on total points, but she leads LezakSquad by 10 and has two more scoring opportunities tonight from Chadwick in the 50 free and Hannis in the 50 breast.

Lezak, swimming without a backstroker, had a big night of his own, getting wins from Nathan Adrian and Mallory Comerford in a Lezak-centric 100 free sweep. In addition, Josh Prenot was second in the 200 IM, Pace Clark third in the 200 fly and Cody Miller 6th in the 100 breast.

The team to beat is still the KrayzelburgSquad, though. The series points leader is 16 out of the Mesa lead, but has the most scoring swims on day 3 – five different Krayzelburg swimmers will contend for titles Saturday night. Already, Chase Kalisz has maxed out at 20 points for the third-straight meet, and Kelsi Dahlia (50 fly) and Olivia Smoliga (50 back) have chances to do the same.

The only other swimmer to already hit max points is Murphy for CoughlinSquad. Others who could hit that mark are Zane Grothe and Leah Smith from SandenoSquad, Nathan Adrian from LezakSquad and Molly Hannis for CoughlinSquad.
