Minnesota’s women’s breaststroke group has gotten plenty of attention, but quietly their men’s breaststroke group was one of the best in the Big Ten last year. That includes three swimmers in the top 7 in the 100 at the 2013 Big Ten Championships.
That group will add some new blood next season, as the Gophers received a verbal commitment from Conner McHugh out of Wisconsin.
McHugh, who swims for the Door County YMCA, has yards bests of 54.0 and 1:59.00 in the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes.
McHugh is the defending yards YMCA National Champion in the 100 yard breaststroke and the runner-up in the 200.
In long course, he’s been 1:03.11 and 2:20.49 in the 100 and 200.
McHugh joins a Minnesota training group that is rebuilding around freshmen Nick Hatanaka and Jakub Maly. Out of those three aforementioned A-finalists, two exhausted their eligibility, and one is no longer listed on Minnesota’s roster.
Conner is awesome! I can’t wait to come watch him swim! Future NCAA champion!
Now the Golden Gophers need to sign a 400 IMer!!!!!!
Jakub Maly? 11th at Short Course Worlds? I think their 400 IM will be alright
My comment was based on the fact that they scored “0” points in the 200 IM and “7” points in the 400 IM at Big Tens…I should’ve said 200IM…but even so, 7 points in 2 IM events isn’t good. Is Jakub a FR this season?
NM COACH – Yep, Jakub sure is a freshman. He’ll help that group in a big way…but you’re exactly right: if they’re going to compete for top two in the Big Ten, they can’t have big holes in the lineup like that.
