Members of the College of Charleston swimming & diving programs met with the college president this week to discuss ways to save the programs from elimination.
College of Charleston announced last November that it would cut its swimming and diving programs at the end of the season due to the costs of maintaining the pool facility. Members of the programs promised to fight to save their team, with overwhelming support from the swimming community.
This week, the team pitched ideas to the President Glenn F. McConnell on how to sustain the program moving forward. Sources close to the situation have said the meeting went as well as it could have, and that the president will meet with athletic director Joe Hull to discuss the ideas.
Any plan to continue the swimming and diving programs would likely come with hefty fundraising requirements on team members – the athletic department noted when it announced the cuts that the school’s aquatic facility has become expensive to maintain, most notably needing a $1.5 million repair project on its ventilation system. But for a program that was already all but pronounced dead, any sign of continued life is an exciting development.
