After breaking the U.S. Open meet record in the 200 IM on Thursday, Chase Kalisz did it again, this time swimming a 4:10.09 to break the 400 IM meet record tonight by over a second. The previous record was a time of 4:11.11 set by Sebastien Rosseau in 2013.
While his time was a bit far off his personal best of 4:05.90 or his 2022 World Championships time of 4:07.47, it was less than a second away from the time of 4:09.49 that he swam to win Olympic gold two seconds ago. To be this close to his Olympic-gold winning time in-season is a great sign for Kalisz, who is swimming in his first meet following his move from Georgia to Arizona State this summer. He made this move to train under his former age group coach Bob Bowman.
In fact, Kalisz’s time tonight was the fastest he’s been at an in-season meet since he went 4:09.43 at the 2019 Arena Pro Series.
Kalisz dominated his race from start to finish, touching the wall 8.29 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Baylor Nelson.
As shown in the splits down below, Kalisz was 1.49 seconds faster than Rosseau on breast, which was the main thing accounting for the gap between the two swimmers.
Kalisz vs. Rosseau, Comparative Splits:
Sebastien Rosseau, 2013 U.S. Open (previous championship record) | Chase Kalisz, 2022 U.S. Open (current championships record) | |
Fly | 56.19 | 56.55 |
Back | 1:04.94 | 1:04.29 |
Breast | 1:11.34 | 1:09.85 |
Free | 58.64 | 59.40 |
Total | 4:11.11 | 4:10.09 |
Chase is so damn talented. Everyone keeps writing him off with him being 28 now, and all the other guys in their early 20s on the way up, but I wouldn’t bet against Kalisz to make the Olympics and medal again.
To be fair, even Chase wrote himself down in 400 IM by saying he’s done with it. I think he should have changed his mind now.
I don’t think he exactly said that. He did say that he couldn’t see himself as at 30 swimming the 400IM. He has a few years.
Congratulations to Chase. Bob Bowman is likely the top long course IM coach in the world. Certainly the records of IMers he has developed and coach would make a great case of this claim.
Will be interesting to see if Carson Foster can make the Olympics with Chase this committed and a bunch of young 4IM guys on the way up
Carson just needs to transfer to ASU already.
