Day two of the Charlotte Ultraswim proved just how fast this grand prix stop can be. A few meet records went down tonight along with some very fast swimming from some of America’s favorites.
The men’s 200m freestyle was home to seven Olympians including Ryan Lochte and Ricky Berens. All eight finalists had international experience. Matt McLean finished with a surprise win over the tough field finishing in 1:49.02. Conor Dwyer finished behind him in 1:49.29 followed by Joseph Schooling who touched in at 1:49.47. Berens finished a far-back fourth and Lochte finished even farther back in sixth.

17 Year old Joseph Schooling came off the 200 freestyle bronze to win the 100m fly in a Singaporean national record of 52.33. Earlier in the morning during prelims Schooling broke the record for the first time. Schooling finished ahead of US Olympian Tyler McGill who touched in just behind him in 52.47.
The sprint breaststroke events tonight were all about Mike Alexandrov, picking up a win in both the 100m and 50m. In the latter of the two he finished with a meet record of 27.71, beating second place finisher Richard Funk by 3-tenths of a second. In the 100m Alexandrov again distanced himself from the field, touching the wall at 1:01.00 to Jorje Murillo’s 1:01.72.
Club Wolverine swimmer Junya Koga broke Adam Mania’s meet record of 25.20 tonight in the 50m backstroke with a time of 25.11. David Plummer finished behind him in 25.26. Previous meet record holder Adam Mania finished in fourth with a time of 25.62.
A new NBAC star seems to be emerging out of Michael Phelps’ shadow with the likes of Chase Kalisz. Kalisz dominated the 400 IM tonight with a meet record time of 4:15.66 which was almost eight seconds faster than second place finisher Ryan Harty.
On the woman’s side the 200m freestyle was all about Olympic gold medallist Allison Schmitt who took the crown with a time of 1:58.76. Her closest competitor Chloe Sutton finished in 1:59.50 followed by Leah Smith in 1:59.62.
Like Alexandrov Jessica Hardy was able to pull of the sprint breaststroke double with a win in the 100m and 50m and also set a meet record in the 50m. In the 50m breaststroke Hardy beat Tennessee swimmer Molly Hannis by a finger nail, out-touching her 30.71 to 30.72. In the 100m Hardy won another close race with Hannis but gave herself a little more room winning in 1:07.03 to Hannis’ 1:07.39.
18 Year-old youngster Olivia Smoliga captured the 50m backstroke tonight with a time of 28.50. In prelims she swam a faster time of 28.34 but she was still able to win tonight after slowing down since the morning.
The woman’s 200m fly final featured one of the greatest duals of the meet between Claire Donahue and Dana Vollmer. World record holder Vollmer pushed the second 50 to create a decent lead for herself touching the wall in 58.24 followed by Donahue in 58.83.
Elizabeth Beisel raced to gold in the woman’s 400 IM with a time of 4:41.30. She was pushed the entire time by competitors Amber McDermott (who finished second in 4:44.26) and Brooke Zeiger (who finished third in 4:44.29).
The Athens Bulldogs took the woman’s 4×100 freestyle relay over SwimMac’s A and B team. The bulldog women charged to a 3:45.44 over SwimMac A’s time of 3:47.01.
On the men’s side the SwimMac boys came home with a big W touching the wall in 3:25.07 over Bolles School’s 3:25.27.

It was actually the 100 fly not the 200. And Schmitt is the Olympic gold medalist, not silver in the 200. Sorry to be nitpicky, you can blame it on my editor brain…can’t turn it off. Great night of swimming, though!

Not a spectacular day of swimming but a few very good performances.
1. Chase Kalisz will travel to Barcelona with Tyler Clary in the 400 IM. Since last year I say he will swim around 4.08/4.10 next summer.
2. The women’s American breaststroke goes well with 3 girls in 1.07. It looks like Jessica Hardy is back for a good summer on breaststroke. And Molly Hannis shows she’s now a serious contender for the 50 breast.
3. The Harty family is very promising with Kaitlin on backstroke and Ryan on IM. I think these 2 young swimmers will be in the conversation for 2016. Just an impression.

I agree about Phelps and the mental edge he had. It didn’t matter the meet. He wasn’t going to let you beat him. That’s a big hurdle to overcome for a swimmer. There is no such mystique with Ryan. Everyone and their brother beats him every month.

the meet site is driving me nuts with the results posted by heat and lane . . . looked at the b-final thinking it was the a final and took me a second to figure out EB’s swim in the 400 IM wasn’t a mid finish in the B final.
Lochte needs to give up on E! and focus on swimming. I know he tends to do this during training meets but he is getting older and this will catch up to him. Schooling is an international student at Jacksonville Bolles. He set a high school national record last fall in the 100 fly.

I agree, he’s very very impressive. He’s only 17 so the skies the limit.
