South African superstar Chad Le Clos is sitting out of the second leg of the 2021 FINA World Cup in Budapest this week, revealing on Instagram Wednesday that he “picked up a knock” prior to the meet which ruled him out.
Le Clos says he’s off to rest and recover and is disappointed he won’t get to race in front of the Hungarian fans.

Le Clos, 29, raced in three individual finals at the opening stop of the World Cup circuit in Berlin Oct. 1-3, winning the men’s 200 butterfly while taking second in the 100 fly and third in the 50 fly. He also raced preliminary heats in the men’s 100 and 200 free, and led off South Africa’s mixed 4×50 medley relay.

- 100 butterfly – 2nd, 49.03
- 100 freestyle – 47.75 (6th in prelims)
- 200 butterfly – 1st, 1:50.32
- 50 butterfly – 3rd, 22.48
- 200 free – 10th, 1:46.05
- 50 backstroke – 23.89 (medley relay lead-off)
The four-time Olympic medalist ranked sixth in the men’s standings following the meet, scoring 51.6 points and netting $5,400.
In Budapest, he was entered to race the men’s 50, 100 and 200 fly and the 200 free.
Le Clos is scheduled to begin competing in the International Swimming League (ISL) playoffs beginning on November 11, with his Energy Standard club slated to race the first of six matches in Eindhoven against the Cali Condors, DC Trident and Iron.
Prior to that, there are two more FINA World Cup stops, “Stage 2” of the circuit, in Doha, Qatar (Oct. 21-23) and Kazan, Russia (Oct. 28-30).
Le Clos has not yet indicated if he plans on racing in Doha or if he will wait until the ISL playoffs.
Le Clos ranked tied for 29th in the ISL Season MVP standings at the end of the regular season, scoring 128.5 points for Energy Standard. The club finished first in the season, sporting a perfect 4-0 record.
