Allison Fitzgerald of Quincy, Massachusetts and Sierra Sexton of Portland, Oregon, have both verbally committed to swim for University of Vermont next year.

“I chose the University of Vermont because I immediately felt welcome. I loved the positive attitude that the team showed during practice and how supportive they were to each other. I have also competed against some of the girls on the team and am excited to train and compete with them as a teammate to represent UVM. In addition to the great academic programs that UVM has, the city of Burlington offers me the chance to experience a division 1 college program in a small town setting.”

Fitzgerald swims for Commonwealth Current in Boston. During her sophomore year of high school, Fitzgerald injured her knee and ultimately underwent surgery in August of 2014. “I was out of the pool for a month and when I returned I had to start slow and rebuild the strength in my knee. It took a lot of determination to get back to where I was before my injury, but through hard work and dedication in practice, I was able to recover in just a few months.

“Butterfly has always been my favorite stroke. While I started preferring to swim the 100 fly, during high school I knew that I have the strength to be successful at the 200 fly and that became my focus and still is today.” Fitzgerald’s best times are:

  SCY LCM
100 fly 57.26 1:05.74
200 fly 2:07.79 2:29.04
50 free 25.28 28.64
100 free 54.36 1:01.88

“The team made me feel at home. I loved the classes I went to. Looking forward to being a member of a great team/family and attending one of the oldest University’s in the land. Go CAT’s.”

Sexton is a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School in Portland, Oregon. At the 2015 OSAA 6A Swimming State Championships, she was runner-up in the 50 free (23.46) and third in the 100 free (51.41). An A-finalist in the sprint freestyles at both short course and long course Sectionals this past year, Sexton achieved the qualifying standard for US Open in the 50 free and for Winter Juniors in the 100 free. Her best times are:

  SCY LCM
50 free 23.45 26.34
100 free 50.82 58.95
200 free 1:53.67 2:08.92

Sexton should provide immediate punch to the Catamounts’ sprint lineup; she would have finished third at 2015 America East conference championships in both the 50 and 100 freestyles, and would have posted the top UVM times in those events. In addition to what she will bring in individual points, Sexton will be an important addition to Vermont’s relays.

Other verbal commits to the UVM class of 2020 are:
