Markus Thormeyer will be joining the High Performance Centre – Vancouver this September to train under top Canadian coach (and Swimswam’s 2014 Canadian coach of the year) Tom Johnson.
In a press release provided by Swimming Canada, Johnson said, “I am really pleased that Markus has decided to join the HPC – Vancouver this coming September. He is an exciting young swimmer who will add to the training group here at the centre.”
Thormeyer secured a spot on his first senior international team this past April at the Canadian Team Trials for his efforts in the backstroke events. He finished second in both the 100 and 200 to World Championship team member Russell Wood. In the 100, Thormeyer was a 55.37, in the 200 he was a 2:01.06.
Although this will be Thormeyer’s first time in the international spotlight, he has had international experience representing Canada. At the 2014 Junior Pan Pacific Championships Thormeyer came home with three medals, taking bronze in the 100 back, 200 back, and 100 free.
“I’m looking forward to next year because of the centre’s excellent staff, resources, and history of success with amazing swimmers,” said Thormeyer to Swimming Canada.
There are plenty of great training partners for Thormeyer at the centre where seven Team Canada swimmers currently train. Although Thormeyer’s focus is the backstroke events, his sprint freestyle is also very impressive. He’ll have guys like Stefan Miloseic, Yuri Kisil, and Coleman Allen to push him on the daily.
