Mackenzie Vargas of California Capital Aquatics has verbally committed to The University of Akron and will begin in the fall of 2016.
“I am so excited to join such a strong and dynamic swim program. The girls on the team were so welcoming and made me feel right at home. I made and instant connection with Coach Peresie and Coach Mergel. They have a clear vision of where this team is headed, and I’m honored to play a part in this vision. I can’t wait to start my new journey as a member of the Akron family! Go Zips!”
Swimming for Roseville, California’s Woodcreek High School in last May’s CIF-Sac-Joaquin Section finals, Vargas placed sixth in the 500 free (4:57.87) and sixth in the 100 fly (57.73). Her top times over the last two seasons are:
SCY | LCM | |
100 fly | 57.17 | 1:04.60 |
200 fly | 2:00.36 | 2:16.43 |
400 IM | 4:25.61 | 5:03.25 |
500/400 free | 4:57.87 | 4:30.37 |
1000/800 free | 10:12.08 | 9:11.27 |
1650/1500 free | 16:52.61 | 17:35.85 |
Vargas is a well-rounded swimmer who will make an immediate impact for the Zips, as her 1000 and 1650 freestyle times would each rank second on Akron’s all-time list and her 200 fly and 400 IM would each rank third.
