Butterflier Amber Paul Chooses To Stay In-State At The University Of San Diego (2023)

Amber Paul has announced her commitment to continue her education and swimming career at the University of the San Diego this fall. Paul is a senior at San Marino High School in California, and also trains year-round with Rose Bowl Aquatics located in Pasadena.

Paul is a sprint freestyle and butterfly specialist. Paul is wrapping up her of her senior season, having recently competed at the CIF-SS Division 2 Championships. She logged personal best times in the 50 free (24.31) and 100 fly (55.73), finishing 5th and 3rd, respectively. Her 100 fly performance qualified her for the CIF State Championships that were held this weekend, where she ended up placing 23rd (55.78).

Paul had a breakthrough meet at the December Speedo Sectionals in LaMirada, where she recorded best times in all three of her individual events. She notched top-20 finishes in both fly events, finishing 17th in the 100 (55.95) and 18th in the 200 (2:06.95). Her 200 fly marked a best time by nearly two seconds, while her 100 was a best by a second. Additionally, she swam a best time by a second in the 200 free for a 1:57.43.

The University of San Diego competed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Toreros 8th out of 10 teams at this year’s MPSF Championships, with their highest individual finisher being Rachel Hubka, who took 9th in the 50 free.  

Paul would have been the team’s 2nd-fastest performer in the 100 fly this year, trailing senior Sam Eason by a tenth of a second. Paul’s best time also projects her to crack the top-16 in the event, meaning she could be an immediate scorer for the Toreros. Senior Mia Shaeffer was the team’s highest finisher this season, coming in at 26th (57.02).

San Diego has built a relatively large incoming class, featuring Elise Sullivan, Ella Petrick, Claire Sheerin, Rosie Jania, Holly Tarantino, Gwendolyn Smith, Milan Bever, Andie Daignault, and Skylar Bruner.
