LEWISBURG, Pa. – Freshmen Clara Renner and Sydney Jee combined for five individual wins, Kyla Kelly and Rylie Giles were double winners, and the Bucknell women’s swimming and diving team made quite an opening-day splash with a 215-84 runaway win over Patriot League rival Boston University on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium.

The Bison finished one spot behind the Terriers at last year’s Patriot League Championships and lost a close dual in Boston as well, but they flipped the script this time around, winning 13 of the 16 events.

Renner won all three of her individual events and was also on a winning relay, and Jee won two events and was on a winning relay as well. Renner swept the two distance freestyle events – the 500 and 1,000 – and she also claimed the 200 butterfly in 2:03.24, which already makes her the ninth-fastest performer in team history in that event. Renner closed out the program by anchoring Bucknell’s victorious 400 free relay, backing up Giles, Virginia Hastings, and Sydney Dettman.

Freshmen Sofia Burns and Jee were the first two Bison in the pool on Saturday, as they took the first two legs of the winning 200 medley relay, Sam Benzija, who would later win the 100 butterfly in a great race where the top four finishers were all within a half-second, and Kelly finished off the win. Bucknell actually went 1-2-3 in the medley relay, the first of nine races in which the Bison took at least the top two places.

Jee later swept both breaststroke events. She went 1-2-3 with Hanna Bingley and Liz Dokina in the 100 and 1-2-3 with Kelly Byrne and Bingley in the 200. Jee was also the runner-up in the 200 IM behind Kelly.

Kelly captured the 100 backstroke and 200 IM and was second to Boston University’s Cambria Jewett in the 200 back. That was the only swimming event the Terriers won all day. They also took both diving events.

Hastings logged a first (50 free), a second (200 free), and a third (100 free) in her three sprint freestyle races. Giles’ wins came in the 100 and 200 free as the Bison dominated the sprints. They went 1-2-3-4 in the 50, with Hastings leading Ashley PiacentinoJennifer Bolden, and Sara Ketron.

The Bison had the runner-up in both diving events, with Meghan Catherwood taking second on the 1-meter board and Reggie Frias second in the 3-meter.

Bucknell is back in action next Saturday at its Fall Invitational at Kinney Natatorium.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Chris Kopac won the 100- and 200-yard freestyles and Jackson Vinarub had a huge day on the 3-meter diving board, but the Bucknell men’s swimming and diving team fell just short against Boston University, 157.5-140.5 in the Bison’s season-opener on Saturday at Kinney Natatorium.

Bucknell won six events on the day, but the Terriers made a big run in the latter half of the meet to surge ahead. Starting with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 backstroke, Boston University outscored the Bison 51.5-24.5 over a four-event stretch. Wins from Vinarub in the 3-meter dive and Andy Dorsel in the 200 individual medley kept the Bison in it, but they would have needed a 1-2 finish in the meet-ending 400 free relay to pull out a one-point win, and the Terriers iced it with a close win by just .77 seconds.

Vinarub’s 307.8 score on the 3-meter board was not only good for a 21-point win, but his PR moved him up to the No. 2 spot in team history. The only better mark came from record-holder David Magaro at the 2011 Patriot League Championships. Vinarub also finished second on the 1-meter board (281.48), and Connor Thurston was third with a score of 268.73 that fell just outside the top-10.

Bucknell started the day by winning the 200 medley relay, with Avery KuhnWill HedgesFinn Russell, and Justin DiSanto edging the Terriers’ quartet by a mere four-hundredths of a second. DiSanto’s 20.29 anchor brought the Bison back from behind.

DiSanto later won the 50 free, was second to Kopac in the 100 free by just .25 seconds, and led off the 400 free relay.

Kopac and freshman Damian Czartoryjski went 1-2 in the 200 free. Alex Crossing had a solid meet in the distance free events, finishing second in both the 500 and 1000. The 500 was one of the best races of the day, as Giovanni Sullo edged Crossing by just .19 seconds.

Sullo, Jonny Farber, and Justin Liao won two events each for the Terriers.
