SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts men’s swimming and diving team picked up a 198-102 win over Bryant in the first meet of 2020 on Friday afternoon. The win marks the fifth on the year for the Minutemen, who swept the top-three spots in four individual events on the day including both backstroke races.
Will Munstermann led the first sweep of the day with a time of 52.62 in the 100 Back as Seamus Trzewik-Quinn and Noah Witt followed behind in second and third. In the 200 Back, it was the freshman Witt who posted the top-UMass time of 1:55.45 to win with Trzewik-Quinn in second followed by Sanjay Sekar in third.
Fellow freshman Jamie MacDonald led a sweep of his own in the final individual race of the afternoon, the 200 IM, clocking in a time of 2:00.37 as he picked up his second event win of the day. MacDonald also took the top-spot in the 200 Fly with a swim of 1:56.79, followed in second by Casey Ransford, who also took the runner-up spot in the 200 IM with Trzewik-Quinn in third.
UMass added a sweep of the top-three spots in the 500 Free, led by Panagiotis Androulidakis’ time of 4:49.78 while Emerson Kiefer and Harry Ortof rounded out the top-three. Kiefer grabbed a distance win of his own earlier in the afternoon in the 1000 Free, posting a time of 9:47.70 with Ortof in third. Androulidakis, meanwhile, went on to post a runner-up finish in the 200 Free with Charlie Rothenberger and Jacques Boffa rounding out the top-four.
Ryan Pedrick grabbed one of the 11 individual wins for the Minutemen in the 50 Free with a time of 21.68 and helped the squad to a meet-opening relay win in the 200 Medley Relay with Michael Tartakovsky, Al Madden, and Munstermann as UMass went one-two.
Robert Katz and Tommy Cotner led the Minuteman divers with one-two finishes on both boards, beginning with a Katz score of 242.69 in the 1-Meter Dive before Cotner claimed the 3-Meter top-spot with a score of 229.05 later in the day.
Freshman Ethan Davey clocked in a time of 52.15 to led three Minutemen in the top-four of the 100 Fly as Munstermann finished right behind in second for one of UMass’ 13 runner-up showings on the day. UMass added two more runner-up finishes in the breaststroke events as Madden took second in the 100 while Luther Gordon touched the wall second in the 200.
The Minutemen will be back in action a week from today as they head to Hanover, N.H. for the Dartmouth Invitational on Jan. 24-25.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Kelly Malyszka and Maja Boric each won a pair of events as the Minutewomen fell to Bryant 180-114 in their first meet of 2020 following the break. The Minutewomen added 10 second-place finishes on the day, opening and finishing the afternoon with a pair of runner-up showings in the relays.
Malyszka claimed her first of two wins in the first individual swim event of the afternoon as she clocked in a time of 10:31.51 to win the 1000 Free. The junior went on to win another distance swim in the 500 Free with a top-time of 5:06.47.
Boric paced the UMass divers on the board once again as she won her 14th and 15th diving events of the year after opening up her senior campaign with 12 straight event wins. Led by Boric, the Minutewomen went one-two on both dives with Boric’s score of 287.77 leading the way in the 3-Meter while her score of 280.87 won the 1-Meter Dive. Beth Luther finished as the runner-up in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter, posting a score of 232.19 to open up action on the 1-Meter board.
Emily Rudiman took second in a pair of freestyle races for UMass, first with a time of 1:59.03 in the 200 Free before going on to take second in the 100 Free with Mariam Labib finishing in fourth. Rudiman also helped the Minutewomen to a pair of runner-up finishes in the relays, posting a time of 1:49.99 in the 200 Medley Relay with Kelsey Cordery, Chelsea Meiring and Malyszka. In the 200 Free Relay to close out the day, the Minutewomen finished with a time of 1:39.49 set by Meiring, Labib, Cordery and Rudiman.
Meiring opened her individual races with a time of 1:07.91 to finish second in the 100 Breast before going on to take third in the 50 Free with Labib and Cordery finishing in a tie for fourth. Mia Flagiello added a runner-up finish in the 200 Breast, coming in second with a time of 2:30.49.
Olga Egkorova finished second in the 200 Fly with a swim of 2:12.39 followed by Alyvia Petrozza in third, who finished her day with three third-place finishes as she took third in both the 100 Fly and 200 IM to close out the individual races for the afternoon. Egkorova also led the Minutewomen in the 200 Back with a third-place finish while McKenna Johnson took fourth after clocking in a time of 1:00.86 earlier in the day to take second in the 100 Back.

“We had a good time down in Florida. All of them worked really hard, it was great to see them step up a day and a half back and go as fast as they did today. Each of them really fought hard and pushed through, and the results showed. Back at it tomorrow!”
Notes and Notables:
- The Bulldogs started the meet with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of Colby Dixon (Summit, N.J.), Dom Scifo (Ipswich, Great Britain), Zach DiGiaro (Middletown, N.J.), and Juan Gonzalez (Al Safa, Dubai) (1:37.76).
- The Black and Gold then got on the board in an individual race with Tyler Stringfellow (Wrentham, Mass.) placing second in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:58.15.
- Bryant got its first win of the night from Matthew Mastroianni (Glastonbury, Conn.) in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.04.
- The Bulldogs continued their winning ways with a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke by FuKang Wong (Johor, Malaysia) (56.54).
- DiGiaro found the podium for a second time with a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:00.14).
- The Black and Gold kept finding the podium with a second and third-place finish in the 50 freestyle by Wong (21.98) and Andrew Allen (Bedford, N.H.) (22.04).
- Mastroianni capped off his great meet with another first-place finish in the 100 freestyle (48.32). Allen placed second in the same event with a time of 48.58.
- Bryant added another win for the day with a victory in the 200 breaststroke by Wong (2:07.56).
- The Bulldogs final top-three individual finish was a third-place finish by Scifo in the 100 butterfly (52.54).
- In diving, Zach Vogel (South Easton, Mass.) placed third in the one and three-meter with scores of 229.12 and 207.82.
- The Black and Gold capped off the day with a first-place triumph in the 200 freestyle relay. Allen, Mastroianni, Wong, and Gonzalez finished with a time of 1:26.35.

Smithfield, R.I.- The Bryant University women’s swimming and diving team defeated UMass 180-114 Friday afternoon at the Chace Athletic Pool. This is the first time since January 12, 2012 that the women have defeated UMass.

- The Bulldogs started the meet on a great note with a first and third-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Brittan), Kayleigh Canavan (Cumberland, R.I.), Reetta Kanervo (Oulu, Finland), and Alyvia Beaudion (Cypress, Texas) (1:47.30) teamed up to finish first. The team of Lindsey Choate (Upper St. Clair, Pa.), Heather Wong (Ramsey, N.J.), Domenica Alcala (Cancun, Mexico), and Julia Larson (Wauwatosa, Wiss.) finished third (1:50.36).
- The Black and Gold had a second and third-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle by Alyssa DiFiore (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Claire Russell (Naperville, Ill.). The duo finished with times of 10:54.65 and 11:14.49.
- Bryant got their first individual victory from Erin Doruska (Ankeny, Iowa) in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:56.10. Fellow Bulldog Beaudion finished third in the same event (2:02.74).
- The Bulldogs earned another victory in the 100 backstroke from Scifo (59.45) and Choate placed third (1:01.19).
- Wong kept the theme of the meet going with a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.59. Cannavan joined Wong on the podium finishing third with a time of 1:08.03.
- Sammi Grenon (Cheshire, Conn.) pulled out another win for the Black and Gold in the 200 butterfly (2:08.37).
- Bryant then had a 1-2 finish in the 50 freestyle with Kanervo winning (24.51) and Laurel Carey (Madison, N.J.) earning third-place with a time of 24.98.
- The Bulldogs added another victory from Alexa Rivera (Boynton Beach, Fla.) in the 200 individual medley (53.50). Carey received third place with a time of 54.54.
- The Black and Gold had another 1-2 finish in the 200 backstroke by Scifo (2:07.56) and Doruska (2:10.57).
- Wong earned another victory in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:27.84. Fellow classmate Rivera finished third (2:30.58).
- Bryant got a second and third-place finish from Scifo (5:10.55) and Grenon (5:14.23) in the 500 freestyle.
- In diving Kyri Chambo (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) placed third in the one and three-meter dive with scores of 188.89 and 207.68.
- The Bulldogs continued their victorious day with another 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly. Kanervo received first-place (59.11) and Gendron finished in second-place with a time of 1:00.71.
- Rivera earned her second victory of the day in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:12.07. Grenon had a second-place finish in the same event (2:12.90).
- Bryant completed their victorious day with a first and third-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Rivera, Cannavan, Choate, and Kanervo won with a time of 1:38.30. Fellow teammates Doruska, Beaudion, Larson, and Carey finished third (1:39.83).
