Bryant Women, Binghamton Men Claim Wins In Split Two-Day Dual

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women’s swimming and diving team captured a victory over Binghamton this weekend with a final score of 195-158 at Saunders Aquatic Center.

Thanks to over five first-place finishes for the Lady Bulldogs, the women secured their second win of the season, placing them 2-0.

Notes and Notables:

  • Megan Beasley led the Bulldogs in diving, winning both the 1m (284.10) and the 3m (247.05) dives.
  • Jacqui Fox placed first in the 200 back (2:05.54) and 100 back (57.38). Fox also contributed to the 200 medley relay along with Jocie Niemczyk, Sofia Doersch, and Marcella Figueroa With a time of 1:46.18.
  • Record breaker, Amanda Witkus, tackled the butterfly events, claiming first in the 200 fly with the new Bryant women’s 200 fly record time of 2:02.40 well also posting a time of 56.55 in the 100 fly.
  • Makayla Pearce dominated the long-distance events finishing first in the 1000 free (10:18.09) and capturing a time of 5:05.20 in the 500 free. Pearce also placed second in the 200 free.
  • The 200-free relay team of Niemczyk, Schow, Doersch, and Figueroa secured a first-place finish with a time of 1:36.21.
  • The 400-yard medley squad (Fox, Niemczyk, Tonelli, and Carline) grabbed second with a 3:51.73.
  • Clara Steen impressed in the 200 IM clocking in at 2:07.45 for first place.

Next Up:
The Bulldogs will head to Providence College on Saturday, November 1st, for an Ocean State matchup.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men’s swimming and diving team fell to last year’s America East champions, the Binghamton Bearcats, with a final score of 232-121 at Saunders Aquatic Center.

The Bulldogs are now 1-1 on the season.


Notes and Notables:

  • Christopher Buonocore led the Bulldogs in diving, winning both the 1m (284.33) and the 3m (300.83) dives.
  • Leo Luna dominated the 1000 free finishing first after competing neck and neck with Binghamton swimmers until the final lap, winning by three seconds with a time of 9:30.62. Luna also took first in the 500 free (4:38.22).
  • Griffin Lajoie placed second in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 51.46.
  • Tim Andrews finished second in a tight race for the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.45).
  • Aidan Trenery took second in the 200-yard IM (1:55.97).
  • The 400 and 200-yard medley squad (Lajoie, Austin, Andrews) ; (Lajoie, Austin, Misto) placed second with a time of 3:26.77 and 1:32.82.
  • The 400 free relay (Misto, Toepfer, Rownson) took second with a time of 3:04.27.

The Bulldogs will head to Providence College on Saturday, November 1st, for an Ocean State matchup.

VESTAL, N.Y. – Seniors Elijah Lanfear and Lauren Kuzma each won three events, highlighting Binghamton’s split against Bryant in a swimming & diving dual meet this weekend at the Saunders Aquatic Center. The two-day meet concluded on Saturday, with the Bearcat men (2-0) winning 232-121 and the women (1-1) finishing within 195-158 of the Bulldogs.

Lanfear – who now has six individual victories in two meets so far this season – swept the men’s  100 back (50.34), 50 free (20.74) and the 100 fly (48.50). Kuzma, meanwhile, captured the women’s 100 breast (1:03.81), 400 IM (4:28.83) and 200 breast (2:17.33). It marked the first time in her career that Kuzma has won three individual events in a meet.

The meet against Bryant was also highlighted by the women’s 400 free relay team’s pool record of 3:30.00. The Bearcat quartet of juniors Maria Pignatelli and Celia Webster, sophomore Juliette Phillips and freshman Leonor Coelho broke the previous mark of 3:31.68, which was set by Army back in 2015.

In addition, there were four Binghamton swimmers who won a pair of individual events against Bryant. Pignatelli swept the women’s 50 free (24.28) and 100 free (52.53), junior Liam Preston took top honors in the men’s 200 free (1:40.44) and 100 free (46.46), sophomore Harrison Lambert was victorious in the men’s 200 fly (1:52.29) and 400 IM (4:07.02) and freshman Tyler Schultz was first in the 100 breast (57.10) and 200 IM (1:55.66).

Other individual winners for Binghamton were Coelho in the women’s 200 free (1:54,57), freshman Evan Peters in the men’s 200 back (1:50.69) and fellow freshman Amir Sadykov in the men’s 200 breast (2:07.34).

Binghamton swept all four men’s relays. The 200 free relay team of Peters, Preston, sophomore Cullin Cole and freshman Ryaan Alshami clocked a time of 1:23.64. The 400 medley relay team of Preston, Schultz, Lanfear and Peters recorded a time of 3:25.17. In the 200 medley relay, Schultz, Lanfear, Cole and junior Max Kaback finished with a time of 1:32.06. Finally, the first-place 400 free relay team included Preston, Cole, Peters and freshman Cameron Stetzer and finished with a time of 3:04.27.

The Bearcat women, meanwhile, also won the 400 medley relay. That quartet included Kuzma, Pignatelli, Nowak and Coelho and recorded a time of 3:40.90.

The Binghamton men scored important points in the diving events. Bryant’s Christopher Buonocore – the reigning America East Diver of the Year – swept both the one- and three-meter events. Binghamton, however, took the next three places in both events as Jacob Koclanis, sophomore Dylan Norby and junior David Marshall went 2-3-4 each time.

Lambert’s stellar meet also included close second-place finishes to Bryant’s Leo Luna – the defending America East champion – in both the 500 free and 1000 free.

Freshman Natalie Kassirer was a close second in the women’s 500 free to defending America East champion Makayla Pierce. She was also second to Kuzma in the 400 IM as well as the runner up to Clara Steen of Bryant in the 200 IM.

In total – there were seven defending America East individual champions between the two programs that took part in the two-day meet.

Binghamton heads to Bucknell next Saturday for a noon meet.
