British Swimming will be taking a group of seven young athletes to compete at the Japan Open from May 22nd to the 24th in Tokyo.
British Swimming Head of Performance Pathway Tim Jones will lead a squad of seven athletes together with coach Mat Trodden (University of Edinburgh) for the three-day event at the Tatsumi Pool.
“This is the second year in succession we have taken a squad of athletes to this meet,” said Jones.
“It’s an excellent development opportunity for both coaches and athletes, and will provide them with valuable experience.”
The group will consist of:
- Cameron Brodie – University of Stirling
- Max Litchfield – City of Sheffield
- Katie Matts – Stockport Metro
- Chloe Tutton – City of Cardiff
- Sarah Vasey – Derventio
- Jess Fullalove – City of Manchester
- Ellena Jones – Swim Swansea
In December British Swimming and the Japanese Swimming Federation created a partnership called the ‘3TP Programme’ that is designed to prepare young up and coming swimmers for success at the 2020 Olympics in Japan.
In December Jones explained the goals of the program, “Our recently launched ‘3TP Programme’ is designed to equip some of our best young talent with a wide range of experiences over the coming years, with the ultimate focus of seeing British swimmers perform with distinction at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.”
“The intention is to expose swimmers, coaches and staff to a very different environment. The culture within is something you have to be comfortable with and that is part of the point and purpose of what we’re now setting out to do on 3TP.”
The first part of that partnership saw a group of eight athletes led by Jones take part in a training camp with top Japanese junior swimmers and coaches.
