Peter has been involved with many sports in his professional career spanning over 35 years but he has always had a strong commitment to and involvement in swimming. He has been involved in various capacities, including school and university swim-coach; coordinator of and teacher on a local authority swimming programme based at the University of Stirling; coordinator of swimming for the erstwhile Scottish Universities’ Sports Association; directing a university scholarship programme involving notable numbers of swimmers; responsible for the operation of the National Swimming Academy; creator of Winning Students, a national scholarship scheme, 18% of whom are swimmers.
Serving as Board Director since 2006 Peter made a fantastic contribution, at a strategic level, to Scottish Swimming’s continuing good health. Peter has worked in education for 35 years and has a good knowledge and understanding of the work of sport in Scotland and within the UK which was invaluable whilst serving as a Board Director. Peter has always had a long term interest and commitment to swimming – in all its forms.
Having worked at the University of Stirling for 36 years and given Scottish Swimming’s long association with the University, a long term involvement with the governing body was inevitable. Peter was responsible for writing a modest history of the governing body to mark its centenary and he was also heavily involved in the establishment of the National Swimming Academy.
He will be sorely missed by so many and our thoughts are with his wife Ellen and three children, Ruth, Easton and Amy, at this time.
British Swimming Chief Executive David Sparkes added: “We wish to add our condolences to Peter’s family at this sad time. Peter has made a huge contribution to Sport, particularly University sport. He has been a massive supporter of swimming and will be sadly missed by us all.”
