WDAZ News is reporting that boat driver, Matthew Allen Kinghorn, has been arrested and charged with criminal vehicular homicide for the boating accident which killed Team Foxjet swim coach Brenda Larson over July 4th weekend.
As we reported, Larson, Kinghorn and a 4-year-old child were thrown from a boat on Cass Lake in Minnesota last Saturday, July 4th. Although Kinghorn and the child were pulled from the lake by passing fisherman and ultimately survived, Larson was recovered unresponsive, not breathing and was later pronounced dead. An autopsy performed on July 5th concluded her death was ‘consistent with drowning.’
Kinghorn told Beltrami County Sheriffs that he had three drinks on that Saturday and was driving his boat when it hit a wave, throwing Larson, himself and his son into the lake. His blood sample taken two hours after the incident showed he had a .125 blood alcohol level.
Larson, who was 50 years old, spent 6 years as a coach with Team Foxjet, where she worked with the ISM groups and the age group bronze groups. Specifically, she worked with swimmers who were new to the competitive level, according to her official biography on the team’s website.
In remembering their coach, Team Foxjet swimmers Isabella Haeger and Kayla Albers said, “she wanted to care for everyone on the swim team, she never left anyone out. And she’ll always be watching over us swimming, cheering us on, like she always is.”
