TOLEDO, Ohio – – The Ball State women’s swimming & diving team picked up eight event wins, including three 1-2-3 finishes, to earn a 172-128 victory over Toledo in Mid-American Conference dual action Saturday afternoon at the Student Recreation Center Pool.
Leading the way for the Cardinals (2-1; 1-1 MAC) with a pair of event wins were sophomore freestyle specialist Marcella Ribeiro and freshman backstroke specialist Lilia Newkirk.
Ribeiro swept the two longest events of the day, winning the 1000 freestyle in 10:21.95 and the 500 freestyle in 5:03.76. Both were season-best times for the program record holder in each event.
Newkirk would also add a pair of season best efforts, winning the 100 backstroke in 57.47 and the 200 backstroke in 2:05.05.
Junior Apsara Sakbun continued her strong start, earning her third win of the season in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.91.
Also picking up individual event wins for the Cardinals were freshman Gracey Payne in the 200 freestyle (1:55.20), senior Alex Bader in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.20) and sophomore Laura Wright in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.97).
Newkirk would lead a 1-2-3 finish in both of her wins, while Riberio lead one in the 500 freestyle.
In the diving well, freshman Ashleigh Provan turned in another solid showing, taking second on both the 1M (246.23) and 3M (260.48) boards.
Next up for the Ball State women’s swimming & diving team will be the IUPUI House of Champions meet held Nov. 18-20 at the IUPUI Natatorium.

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women’s swimming and diving team won eight events in its first home meet of the season on Saturday against Ball State but dropped a 172-128 decision to the Cardinals.
“We are competing strong while in the middle of our hardest training of the season,” head coach Brie Globig said. “I’m happy with the progress we are making as a team.”
Toledo opened the meet with a spectacular 400 medley relay race by Lucie Morris, Lauren Kilgore, Sydney Conrad and Kennedy Lovell, who won the event with a 3:49.85 touch time. The Rockets then closed out the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay by Lovell, Morris, Ashley Lefever and Conrad (1:36.40).
The Rockets’ individual event winners were Conrad in both the 100 butterfly (56.17) and 200 butterfly (2:06.18), Lovell in the 100 freestyle (51.33), Kilgore in the 200 IM (2:08.37), and Madison Giglio on the one-meter (248.40) and three-meter (261.08) dives.
Toledo returns to action when it travels to Huntington, W. Va. to face Marshall on Saturday, Nov. 13. Race time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.
Toledo Top-3 finishes
- Junior Jovana Duric placed third in the 1,000 freestyle with a 10:26.36 touch time.
- In the 200 freestyle, freshman Molly Pressler came in second with a 1:55.86 time, followed by sophomore Nejla Karic who finished third at 1:57.42.
- Junior Lauren Kilgore took second in both the 100 breaststroke (1:04.39) and 200 breaststroke (2:22.21).
- In the 50 freestyle event, junior Kennedy Lovell finished second (23.93), followed by Morris in third (24.33).
- Senior Joelle Gallias finished third in both the one-meter (238.05) and three-meter (249.23) dives.
