Jacob Bening of Cape Girardeau, Missouri has verbally committed to the in-state MSU Bears for 2020-21. Bening swims for Central High School and River City Aquatics. He won the 100 free (46.29) and 100 back (51.52) as a sophomore at the 2017 MSHSAA Class 1 State Championships.

Bening is a Winter U.S. Open qualifier in the 100 back (58.08 LCM) and 200 back (2:04.42 LCM). He had an excellent LCM season, going best times in the 50/100/200 free, 50/100/200 back, 100 breast, and 400 IM. At the 2019 Ozark Swimming LSC Long Course Championships, he won the 50 free, 200 free, 100 back and 200 back and was runner-up in the 100 free. He went on to swim at Des Moines Futures and came in 3rd in the 100 back and 7th in the 200 back. In short course season, he updated a number of best times (50 free, 50/100 back, and 100 IM) at Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships.
Bening’s best times would have ranked in the top-3 on the Bears’ squad last year in the 100 and 200 backstrokes. He would have made the A final of the 100 back at MAC Championships with Conner Ripp (2nd), Jake Schultz (6th), and Thomas Heye (7th). He also would have been in the A final of the 200 back with Ripp (1st), Bryce Blattner (5th), and Heye (6th). Blattner was a senior last year the Ripp, Schultz and Heye are seniors this year, so Bening will arrive just in time to help current freshman Noah Witzki rebuild the backstroke group.
