Arizona State Promotes Derek Schmitt to Assistant Coach

Arizona State head coach Bob Bowman has promoted graduate assistant Derek Schmitt to a full-time coaching position, the program announced on Thursday.

Schmitt spent last season working both with the collegiate program and the post-graduate program while working on his master’s degree in Sport Law and Business.

This will be his first full-time college assistant coaching job, though he’s held many other positions within college programs. That includes as a coaching intern at the University of Tennessee and a team manager at Pitt.

Prior to Arizona State, he was an assistant coach with the Plymouth-Canton Cruisers, a USA Swiming bronze medal club.

As an athlete, he spent a year swimming at Ohio (2006-2007), followed by a transfer to Pitt for one season (2007-2008) when the former team cut their men’s program. His degree is from a 3rd school, Eastern Michigan University, where he earned his bachelor’s in sports management in 2015.

Schmitt is the older brother of three-time Olympic gold medalist Allison Schmitt, who currently trains with the program’s post-graduate group. Allison is currently living with Michael Phelps, who will join Derek on the Arizona State staff next fall.

“Alison is currently iiving with Michael Phelps “. that might need another clause there. Not that Arizona doesn’t have a significant polygamy presence but no not our MP! I’m just not picturing it.

I love (not really) how Bowman’s wearing an MP shirt and all the other coaches are wearing ASU shirts. If/when MP donates a fortune to ASU, then wear the shirt.

I’m sure that ASU are so happy to have him and his pro-group, that they will let him wear whatever shirt he likes. If it was a speedo shirt, nobody would have even noticed.

Also the ASU team was sponsored by the MP brand they all had their team suits MP bran. I am sure that is a ASU shirt much like some coaches wear their school shirt and it has the Nike swoosh on it.

Bob Bowman has become a kind, kind man.

Derek also happens to be a Hot Rod aficionado. If you don’t think that’s pertinent to coaching, you’re wrong.

How is this possible under NCAA limits to staff?

Phelps, Mallam, Hymann, Dan… And now Schmidt that seems like it’s too many assistants for an NCAA D1 team.

Could anyone explain how they are making this happen?

NCAA rules allow for 6 named coaches on a combined team staff (this includes the diving coach). In addition, they can have up to 2 volunteer coaches and up to 6 undergraduate coaches. The can also have a Director of Ops if they want.
