Angie Coe Scores Two Top Seeds During Day 4 Prelims Session Of Y Nationals

2023 YMCA NATIONALS (SC)

Today is the fourth day of competition at the 2023 YMCA  Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina. This morning’s line-up saw the heats of the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, and 800 freestyle relay.

Greater Spartanburg YMCA’s Hayden Penny kicked things off with the fastest swim of the morning in the girl’s 500 freestyle. Penny stopped the clock at 4:52.88, clearing the field by nearly a second. The Kentucky commit owns a personal best time of 4:50.90, which she swam at this meet last year to finish 4th.

On the boy’s side, Virginia commit David King decisively claimed the top seed going into tonight’s 500 freestyle final with a 4:27.02. King was well off his personal best of 4:21.24, which he swam at the Virginia Senior Championships last month. In the 400 IM yesterday, King was almost seven seconds faster in finals than he was in prelims, meaning he’ll likely be much faster in this event tonight as well. Isaac Fleig of Schroeder Y also dipped below 4:30, logging a 4:29.80 to take the 2nd spot this morning.

Texas recruit Angie Coe of Champaign County YMCA recorded a personal best time of 1:58.81 to take the top seed in the 200 IM. Coe finished second in this event last year behind Emily Thompson, who swam a 2:00.52 to qualify in the third position this morning. Sydney Gring joined Coe under two-minutes, logging a 1:59.72 for the 2nd-fastest time of prelims.

Coe went two-for-two on earning top seeds today, as she returned in the 50 free with the fastest time of the morning at 22.57. Alexa Fulton, who is also headed to Texas this fall, finished just 0.03 behind in 22.60. Defending champion and meet record holder Anna Moesch qualified in third with a 22.76.

Cumberland YMCA’s Daniel Diehl swam the fastest time of the morning in the boy’s 200 IM with a 1:47.24. The 17-year-old was over four seconds off his personal best time of 1:43.01, which he set at Winter Juniors this past December. Camden Taylor from Rock River Valley YMCA shaved off a tenth from his personal best to take 2nd with a 1:48.72. Rounding out the top three qualifiers was 15-year-old Kenneth Barnicle, who dropped over a second and half from his entry time to record a 1:49.56.

Two swimmers broke the 20-second barrier in the boy’s 50 freestyle heats, led by Virginia Tech commit Brendan Whitfield. Whitfield stopped the clock at 19.85 this morning, putting him less than half a second off his best time from Winter Juniors. Roman Jones, a Cal commit, touched at 19.99 this morning for the 2nd spot heading into tonight’s final.
