PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Competing in their first event of 2025, the Akron Swim team took down Duquesne 257-117 on the road on Friday.
The Zips started the dual against the Dukes by taking the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay. The “A” squad of Madelyn Gattrall (26.27), Claire Cox (29.57), Abigail Daniel (24.68) and Ada Szwabinska (22.69) finished first with a time of 1:43.21 while the “B” squad of Julia Mauter (26.95), Dinica Bosman (29.96), Maggie Patterson (26.54) and Brienne Trumpower (23.83( finished second with a time of 1:47.49.
Akron then took two of the top three times in the 200-yard IM. Dominika Kossakowska finished first with a time of 2:09.69 while Hannah Trainer took third with a time of 2:10.50.
The Blue and Gold continued their streak of first-place finishes as Kendall Craig took gold in the 200-yard fly with a time of 2:10.770. Callie Parkes finished third with a time of 2:14.91.
The Zips continued their domination with a one-two punch in the 100-yard fly. Rebecca Reid finished first with a time of 56.71 and Aislinn Holder took second with a time of 57.63.
Helena Lalkovic finished third in the 200-yard back with a time of 2:18.59 while the 50-yard free saw Szwabinska place first with a time of 23.34 and Cox finishing second with a time of 24.87.
Akron once again took the top two times, this time in the 50-yard fly. Gatrall finished first with a time of 26.10 while Mauter took second with a time of 26.80.
The Blue and Gold continued to rack up wins with Patterson finishing first in the 1000-yard free (10.29.76) and Lalkovic taking second (10:41.40).
Klintemar and Trumpower earned first and second in the 100-yard back with times of 58.60 and 1:00.36 while Daniel and Craig finished first and second in the 400-yard IM with respective times of 4:33.55 and 4:35.16.
The “A” squad of Szwabinska (23.59), Gatrall (23.93), Reid (23.86) and Holder (23.52) finished first in the 200-yard free relay with a time of 1:34.90 while the “B” squad of Kossakowska (24.67), Trainer (24.51), Parkes (24.36) and Trumpower (23.73) took second with a time of 1:37.27.
Akron claimed gold in the 50-yard breast with Bosman finishing with a time of 30.86 and Holder taking third with a time of 32.02.
Daniel and Patterson finished second and third in the 200-yard fly with times of 1:55.21 and 1:55.76 while Klintemar and Mauter finished first and second in the 100-yard IM with times of 59.97 and 1:01.29.
The 500-yard free saw Kossakowska place second with a time of 5:06.49 and Trainer taking third with a time of 5:18.90.
Akron would earn second and third again, this time in the 50-yard back. Trumpower finished second with a time of 27.82 and Patterson took third with a time of 29.44.
The 100-yard free would be another event the Zips claimed gold in with Szwabinska leading the way with a time of 51.94. Reid earned silver with a time of 52.96.
The Zips continued to set the pace with a first and second place showing in the 200-yard breast. Daniel took gold with a time of 2:23.36 and Madelyn Bosler took silver with a time of 2:23.72.
The 100-yard breast featured another pair of Zips taking the top two spots with Gatrall finishing first with a time of 1:07.92 and Efthymia Mazaraki taking second with a time of 1:09.15.
Akron concluded the dual with Duquesne with yet another first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The “A” squad of Reid (56.95), Cox (1:05.07), Holder (56.84) and Trainer (52.93) claimed gold with a time of 3:51.79 while the “B” squad of Mauter (57.40), Bosler (31.28), Klintemar (1:02.71) and Kossakowska (1:21.68) finished third with a time of 3:53.07.
The Zips are back in action with a conference dual meet at Buffalo on January 18 for an 11 a.m. start.

Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Duquesne University swimming & diving team kicked off its 2025 schedule on Friday night, competing against Akron is a “mystery” meet inside Towers Pool, dropping a 257-117 decision.
The 200-yard medley kicked the meet off, with the team of Abby Philipsen, Sydney Severini, Ashely Freel, and Katie Simpson securing the bronze with a time of 1:47.49. Freshman Ashley Freel highlighted the Dukes, securing a pair of first-place finishes. She secured the gold in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.10 before taking the top spot in the 50-yard back by touching the wall at 27.10. The freshman also swam the third leg of the 400-yard medley relay that secured silver with a time of 3:52.90.
Senior Orla Egan captured a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle while touching the wall at 5:06.20 while classmate Haley Scholer secured the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle by clocking in a time of 1:54.06. Scholer also took bronze in the 100-yard fly (57.71). Freshman Sierra Snow captured a silver medal in the 200-yard IM (2:10.50) while taking bronze in the 100-yard IM (1:02.20). Classmate Caitlin Horning captured the silver in the 200 fly with a time of 2:11.32.
Freshman Rachel Howard took second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:1507) while junior Sydney Severini took the silver in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 30.82. In the 50-yard free, sophomore Julia Sobun secured the bronze by touching the wall at 25.30. Freshman Kaitlyn Connors took third in the 50-yard fly (26.83) while sophomore Lexi Sundgren finished in third in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:43.92). Connors also took the bronze in the 100-freestyle with a time of 53.87.

“Brian and I came up with this concept a few years ago in one of our meets and thought it would be an excellent time and challenge to do the format again,” head coach David Sheets said, “Our team was excited about the format and looked forward to seeing what events they would compete in. It was interesting to watch how we responded to the unknown and this will help prepare us for the unexpected.”
Junior Aislinn Mooney secured a third-place finish with the 100-yard breaststroke by touching the wall at 1:12.11. The 200 freestyle team of Sobun, Egan, Sundgren, and Howard registered a third place finish with a time of 1:38.34 while the 400-yard medley relay team of Scholer, freshman Jessica Burns, Freel, and Connors ended the event with a second-place finish with a time of 3:52.90.

“Anytime you swim a school like Akron you have to be prepared for their best,” Sheets continued. “Brian is a great coach and does a great job with his team. Our team approached the meet with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. I was glad we had the opportunity to compete against them. We learned a lot about ourselves and know we have some details to work through over the next several weeks.”
