As the college season gets underway, North Carolina and Georgia Tech both got off to a good start.
UNC Women Defeat South Carolina, Fall to A&M
Women: Texas A&M 190 – SC 102; A&M 174.5 – UNC 123.5; UNC 198 – SC 99
The UNC Women split a tri-meet in Columbia on Saturday, beating South Carolina and falling to Texas A&M.
In the first individual race of the meet, and of her season, North Carolina’s Stephanie Peacock won the 1000 free in 9:40.96. For the defending NCAA Champion in the 1650, that is easily the best time in the country so far.
A&M Olympian Cammile Adams was 2nd in that race in 9:47.89, but would come back later to win the 200 fly, her primary event, in 1:59.55. North Carolina freshman Emma Nunn was third, keeping close to A&M Olympian Cammile Adams who pulled away in the final 50 yards.
Despite losing to A&M in many of the stroke events, North Carolina did well in the freestyles. Danielle Siverling won both the 100 free (50.57) and 200 free (1:47.67), and UNC took 2nd-honors in both races. Texas A&M’s Lili Ibanez bounced-back on the Aggies’ 400 free relay, though, with a 49.51 anchor to defeat UNC.
All in all however, it was a strong start to the season for UNC.

North Carolina Men Sweep A&M, USC
Men: UNC 168 – SC 132; UNC 178.5 – A&M 121.5, SC 160 A&M 140
After losing the first relay North Carolina took control of the meet, winning 5 events.
The Tar Heels got immediate dividends from sophomore transfer David Speese, who won the 100 breaststroke in 57.13. Speese transfered to UNC after Maryland cut their program last season, and is already proving his worth.
The two Carolinas battled it out in the 400 free relay,which came down to the final touch. There, Jt Stilley of North Carolina had just enough to out-touch the hard-finishing Flach by .01 seconds: 3:02.04-3:02.05. North Carolina got off to a great start thanks to a 45.14 leadoff by freshman Logan Heck.

Georgia Tech Men, Women Defeat College of Charleston
Georgia Tech women started off the meet going 1-2 in the 200 medley relay to rack up big points in that event. Their men’s team did the same. They swept the 1000 free, led by Kate Woolbright in a time of 10:24. Michael Kenny won for the men in a 9:46.
In the 200, Hailey White led a pack of Georgia Tech swimmers with a 1:52 while Andrew Kosic’s 1:41 was good for first on the men’s side.
Georgia Tech women were spread a little thin in the backstroke, and none of them managed to break a minute in the 100. That was their first event loss of the day, but they still got second. All three of their breaststrokers were disqualified for “entering the water without permission.” Meanwhile, their men’s team continued to dominate in both the 100 back and 100 breast.
Georgia Tech women were back on top in the 200 fly, Kate Brandus leading a 1-2-3 sweep. In the sprint free events, Georgia Tech men won both while their women split, losing the 50 but winning the 100. Georgia Tech’s swimmers started exhibitioning by the end of the meet.
what does entering the water without permission exactly mean? it cant be false start… that was called in another race when a swimmer actually flinched then slipped into the water….. why would GT begin exhibitioning towards the end? out of courtesy? Please explain to the NCAA uninitiated…… 🙂
