Saint Francis Women Claim Victory At Western PA Invite; Carnegie Mellon Highlights Men’s Meet

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Red Flash cracked the top three in multiple events.

Sara TurnerKatie WebsterTaylor Weth and Anna Bernasconi finished the 200-yard freestyle relay in third with a time of 1:39.09.

Bridget Kurtzweil placed second in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:08.15.

The Red Flash swept the top three in the 500-yard freestyle. Aurem Pifarre won with a time of 5:03.12. Turner took second at 5:04.25. Anna Vicent Serrano rounded out the top three, clocking in at 5:11.51.

Oksana Horova and Bernasconi earned top places in the 100-yard breaststroke. Horova won at 1:05.59 with Bernasconi placing third at 1:07.14.

Inde Patterson finished third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.30.

Pifarre also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 53.19.

In the 200-yard butterfly, Ava Silva finished with a time of 2:11.23 for third place.

Maura RubioKathryn Tanis, Patterson and Horova won the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:52.48.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Kurtzweil, Weth, Laryssa Webster and Reegan Brown won with a time of 1:46.50.

Horova and Turner earned second and third, respectively, with times of 1:54.78 and 1:55.40.

Individually, Weth finished second in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 58.72.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Turner finished second with Abby King taking third place. Turner’s time was 2:23.42, and King’s was 2:26.11.

Patterson and Kurtzweil placed second and third in the 100-yard backstroke at 57.35 and 58.04.

Horova and Rubio nabbed first and second in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing at 23.86 and 24.62.

The Red Flash will swim in the Northeast Conference Championships on Feb. 18-22 at the SPIRE Aquatics Center.

(Pittsburgh, Pa) – The Carnegie Mellon University women’s swimming and diving team hosted the Western PA Invitational on Friday, January 31 and Saturday, February 1. The Tartans placed second overall with 38 points in a field of five teams from Chatham University, Duquesne University, Grove City College, Saint Francis University, and Saint Vincent College.

  • Junior Savannah Xu won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:07.40. Junior Audrey Soetanto finished third in 2:10.28.
  • Xu also placed second in the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:04.88 and third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.84.
  • Junior Audrey Lambert placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.08.
  • Freshman Natalia Evans-Gibson won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.31.
  • The 400-yard medley relay team of Xu, sophomore Elizabeth Shaffer, Soetanto, and freshman Janna Lu earned third with a time of 5:55.83.
  • Freshman Alexandra Scharpf swam the 400-yard IM in 4:38.60, placing second.
  • The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Xu, junior Grace Malinger, Soetanto, and Lu finished third in 40.53.
  • Senior Kyndall Tatum placed sixth on the 1-meter springboard with 228.75 points after six dives and seventh on the 3-meter spingboard with 239.60 points.

  • Freshman Daniel Baytin won the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 55.15 and breaking the pool record.
  • Freshman Matt Peitler won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.28, breaking the pool record.
  • The Tartans swept the top three in the 200-yard IM: senior Christian Lanuza finished first in 1:54.31, sophomore Thomas Xiao finished second in 1:54.95, and sophomore Andy Lu finished third in 1:58.48.
  • The Tartans swept the top nine places in a field of 18 athletes in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Jacob Quan, freshman Philip Thayer, and freshman Alan Pham claimed the top three places in 4:36.75, 4:36.86, and 4:45.56, respectively.
  • Freshman Matvey Malinovski, freshman Raaghav Reddy, and sophomore Miles Haraldsson swept the top three in the 200-yard backstroke with times of 1:48.58, 1:53.42, and 1:57.76, respectively.
  • Junior Todd Achuff won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:55.37.
  • The 400-yard medley relay team of freshman Charley Hu, freshman Cayden Liao, sophomore Brayden Morford, and Peitler finished first with a time of 3:24.54.
  • The Tartans swept the top five in the 400-yard IM. Senior Sammy Telanoff, Morford, and Quach took the top three spots with times of 4:07:00, 4:08.88, and 4:08.95, respectively.
  • The Tartans took the top seven places in the 200-yard freestyle. Quan, Peitler, and Liao were the top three with times of 1:43.07, 1:44.67, and 1:44.23.
  • Graduate student Frank Jones won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:06.41.
  • Reddy won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 51.20.
  • Thayer, Haraldsson, and Quan held the top three places in the 1,650-yard freestyle with times of 16:12.96, 16:27.63, and 16:28:96.
  • Senior Jonathan Lindstrom placed first on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 271.00 after a six dive list. He also placed first on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 249.55 after a six dive list.
  • Sophomore Nico Shuster placed second on both boards, earning 259.15 points on the 1-meter and 210.10 points on the 3-meter.
