American University Women Claim First Victory Over ODU In 20+ Years; Monarch Men Victorious

WASHINGTON – With wins in 10 of 11 events including a new pool record, the American University women’s swimming & diving team came away with a dual meet win over Old Dominion for the first time in at least 22 years. It was a Senior Day split for the Eagles, who took one event on the men’s side in a team loss to the Monarchs.

Notable Results 

  • The Eagles and Monarchs have faced each other many times since the days when both were competitors in the CAA, but ODU had always won against both the men and women until today.
  • American started strong with a record-setting foursome that set another one today. Piper CrosbyMarin PriddyMimi Watts and Lian Jeong Engle teamed up for a win and a pool-record swim in 1:44.79 in the women’s 200 medley relay.
  • Kate Willliams followed with a victory in the women’s 1,000 freestyle in 10:46.14.
  • Getting two individual wins for the women was Isabel McGovern, in both the 200 freestyle (1:55.04) and the 100 butterfly (57.25).
  • Watts earned a win in the women’s 50 free in 23.81, and Jeong Engle took first in the women’s 100 free (52.86).
  • On her Senior Day, Katie Yoo took the top spot in the women’s 400 IM in 4:36.76.
  • Two freshmen got individual wins with Demetra Bicos placing first in the women’s 500 free in 5:12.92, and Priddy taking first in the women’s 100 breaststroke in 1:06.43.
  • In the final event, the women’s 400 free relay, the Eagles took first in 3:33.74 thanks to the foursome of Watts, Jeong Engle, McGovern, and freshman Grace Gilbert.
  • For the men’s side, freshman Luke Martens was a winner in the 400 IM in 4:10.81. He was followed by freshman Cole Coffman in second place (4:12.13).
  • Colin Clough earned a pair of individual second-place finishes in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
  • Watts, Jeong Engle, and McGovern all finished the day with three total wins.

Next Up

  • The final meet for the Eagles prior to the Patriot League Championships is next weekend as they head to Lewisburg, Pa., for the Bucknell Invitational at noon on Saturday, Feb. 1.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Old Dominion University men’s swimming team defeated American 139-66 in Washington D.C. on Friday evening while the women’s squad fell to the Eagles 141-66.

The women’s 200 medley relay team of Samantha AllredMary DunworthAngela Sicaja and Lauren Masters finished second with a time of 1:48.34.

The men’s 200 medley relay team of Gustaf HanssonAugust ErikssonJamie Cleaver and Ryan Lincicum earned the win with a time of 1:32.35.

Sophia Kapla came in second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:49.54, while Grey Bremer won the 1000 free with a time of 9:44.59.

Mallory Mackay and Kristilynn Mosley finished second and third in the women’s 200 free with times of 1:58.66 and 1:59.85, respectively.

Ben Schattenberg won the men’s 200 free with a time of 1:43.69.

Dunworth finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.59.

Zachary Redding won the 50 free with a time of 21.04 and Bryce Mortimer came in second with a time of 21.62.

Kiersten Donnelly earned a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.56.

Cleaver won the 100 fly with a time of 50.17, while Dawson Truong came in second in a time of 51.22.

Lauren Masters finished second in the 100 free with a time of 54.02.

Redding notched his second win of the day with a time of 45.66 in the 100 freestyle.

Dunworth notched a win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.12, while Hansson led the men’s 100 backstroke with a time of 50.90 and Schattenberg took second in 52.76.

Kapla earned another second-place finish with a time of 5:17.68 in the 500 free.

Bremer earned his second win with a time of 4:35.86 in the 500 free.

In the 100 breaststroke, Marian Cheramy earned a second-place spot in a time of 1:08.49.

Mortimer notched a win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.30.

The 400 women’s freestyle relay team took of Jadyn WhittKiersten DonnellyAngela Sicaja and Bella Pachek took third in 3:43.65.

The men’s 400 free relay team of Cleaver, Lincicum, Mortimer and Redding earned the win with a time of 3:08.45.
