The first day of the Austin Sectionals meet took place yesterday, featuring the 800 free, 100 free, 200 breast, and 200 fly.
The women’s 100 free saw a excellent race in the A final, including a tie for 1st. Loveland Swim Club 16-year-old Zara Zallen and Elevation Aquatics 17-year-old Mary Codevilla, both clocked 56.51 to tie for the win in the race. Fellow Elevation Aquatics 17-year-old Morgan Lukinac came in 3rd with a 56.59. All 3 girls entered the meet with a 57-point personal best. Tualatin Hills Swim Club 18-year-old Elizabeth Cook took 4th in 56.70. The swim was a personal best for Cook, who entered the meet with a 56.81. Scottsdale Aquatic Club star Ashley Strouse swam the fastest time in prelims, 56.82, but swam a 57.63 in finals for 6th place.
Codevilla was back in the pool for the women’s 200 breast, where she placed 2nd in 2:33.19. The swim was another lifetime best for the 17-year-old, who entered the meet with a 2:35.11 personal best. Tualatin Hills 16-year-old Katharine Adams won the race in 2:31.94, marking a 0.80-second improvement from her personal best. She swam a very consistent race, splitting 1:14.25 on the first 100, and 1:17.69 on the 2nd.
Pikes Peak Athletics 17-year-old Quintin McCarty took the men’s 100 free in 50.38. The swim marked a personal best by 0.33 seconds for McCarty. Scottsdale Aquatic Club’s Daniel Matheson, who competed at the Olympic Trials Wave II meet in June, blasted a huge new personal best for 2nd in the race. Matheson is primarily a distance freestyler, but clocked a 51.19 for 2nd last night, a nearly 5-second improvement off his previous best of 56.01, which he swam at the beginning of 2020.
Matheson, notably, didn’t race the men’s 800 free, which is probably his best event. In his absence, Phoenix Swim Club 17-year-old Thomas Joswiak clocked a new personal best of 8:22.90 to win the race handily. The swim marked a 12.68-second improvement for Joswiak.
Tualatin Hills 16-year-old Diego Nosack took the men’s 200 fly in 2:01.45, posting a new personal best by 0.43 seconds. He led fellow 16-year-old, Keaton Jones from Swim Neptune, who touched 2nd in 2:02.74. Jones’ time was a huge personal best, taking 3.58 seconds off his entry of 2:06.32.
Diego’s older brother, Marco Nosack, 18, won the men’s 200 breast in 2:18.54, prevailing in a tough race with Loveland Swim Club’s Baylor Lewis, also 18 (2:18.65). It was Lewis who got out to the early lead, clocking a 1:06.68 on the first 100, while Nosack posted a 1:07.94. Nosack had the superior closing speed, however, finishing in 1:10.60 on the final 100, while Lewis swam a 1:11.97. Nosack was slightly off his personal best of 2:18.19, while Lewis took nearly a full second off his best of 2:19.54.
Foothills Swim Team 18-year-old Kathryn Shanley took the women’s 800 free in 8:59.33. She touched as the only swimmer in the field under 9:00, although her time was slightly off her 8:56.94 personal best.
