Olympic and World Champion Simone Manuel will make her 2019-2020 season debut this weekend at the Pro Swim Series stop in Greensboro, North Carolina. She’s one of a number of swimmers who will make the trip from the west coast across the country to race in the debut meet of the 2019-2020 Pro Swim Series.

Manuel is entered to race the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free 100 fly and 100 back in Greensboro. As a non-participant in the debut season of the International Swimming League, the last time that we saw Manuel race was at the World Championships, where she won the 50 and 100 meter freestyles individually as part of a 7-medal haul (the other 5 came on relays).

She’ll be joined by a number of swimmers from the Stanford post-grad group, including Olympic champion Katie Ledecky, who will race the 100/200/400/800 freestyles and the 200/400 IMs; and Ella Eastin, who is entered in a diverse array of events, including her IM specialties, but also including at least one event from each of the 5 disciplines (200/400 free, 100 back, 100/200 fly, 100 breast, 200/400 IM).

Another swimmer making her season debut will be Allison Schmitt, who is entered in the 100, 200, 400, and 800 freestyles in addition to the 100 fly.

While some of the ISL holdouts will be making their debuts at this meet, many of the ISL swimmers will be racing, including Marius Kusch, the DeLoof Sisters, and Jacob Pebley of the New York Breakers, Hali Flickinger, Justin Ress, Andrew Wilson and Tate Jackson of the Cali Condors, Kathleen Baker, Anastasia Gorbenko, and Michael Chadwick of the LA Current, Kristian Gkolomeev of the Aqua Centurions, among others. Most of the Cal men, like Nathan Adrian, Josh Preno, and Ryan Murphy, are absent.

Leah Smith is also not entered in the meet after withdrawing from the first 2 ISL events with a reported neck injury. She still hasn’t raced since the World Championships, where she took silver as part of the American 800 free relay and bronze in the 400 free.

The pro training groups from Indiana will also be absent from the meet.

Other Highlight Entries:

• After an early-season 49.5 in the 100 yard fly in October, Canadian Maggie MacNeil will race in Greensboro in long course for the first time since the World Championships.
• The women’s 100 back will feature a loaded field that includes former World Record holder Kylie Masse, a pair of American teens on the National Team in Katharine Berkoff and Isabelle Stadden, and National Age Group Record holder Claire Curzan. That race won’t, however, feature Kathleen Baker, the most recent World Record holder before Regan Smith undercut it this summer. She’s entered in the 100 free, 100 breast, 200 free, and 200 back.
• Zane Grothe will race the 200, 400, and 1500 meter freestyles, but not the 800 free – where he’s the U.S. Open Record holder. That 800 free will still include a good field led by University of Florida post-grads True Sweetser and Mitch D’Arrigo.

Prize Money:

The 2019-2020 Pro Swim Series will continue to hand out significant prize packages for the top 3 finishers in each individual Olympic event:

• 1st – $1,500
• 2nd – $1,000
• 3rd – $500

Further, USA Swimming will continue to $1,500 bonus given to the highest scoring prelims swim in an individual Olympic event (USA Swimming members and eligible to represent the US in international competition only).

Additionally, a $10,000 bonus will be given to the swimmer who, throughout the series, has the highest-scoring swim in an individual Olympic event based on FINA power points (again, must be a USA Swimming member and eligible to represent the US in international competition).

This year, there is no season-long points total or prizes.
