Hungarian iron lady Katinka Hosszu added 5 more wins to her total to close out the 2016 Hungarian Short Course Nationa Championships. On day 4, she picked up a win in each stroke disciple, as well as an IM gold.
One of her victories came in the 200 free, where she battled with fellow Olympian Zsuzsanna Jakabos. Throughout the first 150 of the race, the two swimmers were within tenths of each other. On the final 50, however, Hosszu extended her lead to win in 1:54.08 ahead of Jakabos’ 1:55.38. After falling just short in the 200, Jakabos went on to win the 50 free in 24.51.
Hosszu’s additional wins came in the following races:
- 400 IM- 4:36.27
- 200 back- 2:05.11
- 100 fly- 57.56
- 100 breast- 1:06.97
On the men’s side, David Foldhazi won a national title on his way to 2 medals on the final day of competition. His gold medal came in the 100 IM, where he clocked a 53.96 to win the race by over a second ahead of Peter Bernek (55.02). Foldhazi also earned silver medals in the 100 back and 200 breast with times of 52.63 and 2:09.73 in those races respectively.
Shortly after placing 2nd in the 200 IM, Bernek returned to the pool to win a gold of his own. Bernek earned his national title in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:44.72 to outpace Mark Meszaros (1:46.26).
How many medals / wins did she get overall at the Hungarian Short Course Nationals?
She won 16 gold medals, only a DQ in the 50 free stopped her from winning all 17 events.
