2012 Men’s NCAA’s Day 2 Up/Downs

Here are each team’s up/downs for the 2nd day of the 2012 NCAA Championships. These up/downs represent the number of swimmers a team will have in the “A” Final (up) and the number they will have in a “B” final (down) for the evening session, and are an important indicator of how a team is faring.

Remember that each of these teams will probably have one additional evening swim from their 800 free relays, which are not swum in prelims.

Once again, Cal, with 15 evening swims, leads the way. But the gap is much tighter than it was on day 1, with Texas coming in at 12. For the Longhorns, that’s a massive improvement over seed, including 6 additional A-Finals.

Arizona similarly did very well, with 9 total evening swims. They did give up an A for a B as compared to seed, but it’s still a much better number than day 1.

USC won’t score much tonight, but then they weren’t seeded to either. Michigan should get some big points, but not as many as expected – they lost three A-finalists as compared to seed. Having no scorers in the 100 breaststroke especially hurts them. Auburn, with 7 evening swims, is two more than they were seeded for.

Most of the rest of the top-10 contenders did pretty-close what they were expected to.
