Becca Evans, a 28-year-old Wales woman who had “lost everything” as a result of floods caused by Storm Dennis in February died of COVID-19 April 9, according to the BBC. Evans was reportedly a dedicated volunteer with the Rhondda Polar Bears disabled swimming club.
Evans’ family believes she contracted the virus in the hospital after being admitted in March for an infection, according to the BBC.
A friend of Evans, Jacqui Onions, said that Evans and her 52-year-old mom had recently moved into a new home and were putting their lives back together after the floods.
“She was so widely loved by so many people. I’ve had so many messages from people saying they’ll remember her smile and her willingness to help anybody,” Onions said. “Everyone she met, she touched their lives in some way and everyone loved her.”
In addition to volunteering with the swim team, Evans had been involved with dance from childhood, as well as the Girl Guiding (Girl Scout) movement.
“Becca was just completely unique, she had an absolute heart of gold, she was always doing something, always active and always smiling.”
Very sad to read about the unfortunate situation leading to an apparently wonderful young woman. I wish more readers would post here as a method of support for not only this coach but her family, friends and humanity in general. To be in the prime of one’s life and to be so taken is heart breaking. Thank you Swim Swam for posting this article.
Terrible to wake up and read this news, especially for someone so young. I don’t know about her health before all of this, but as someone who is not much older, it’s been eye-opening every time I hear about a young person dying of COVID-19.. we’ve been hearing from the get-go that this isn’t a concern for the young. Best wishes to her family and friends.
