2018 M. NCAAs: Harvard 400 Medley Relay Among Day 2 Scratches

2018 MEN’S NCAA SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

We’re on to day 2 of the 2018 Men’s NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Swimmers are set to compete in prelims of the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free individually this morning. We’ll also see prelims of the 200 free relay, 400 medley relay, and men’s 1-meter diving.

One of the notable scratches for Thursday is Harvard’s 400 medley relay. That means swimming fans won’t get a chance to see Dean Farris swim a 100 back at this meet. Farris, who pulled off a winning double between the 200 free and 100 back at the Ivy League meet, opted out of the individual 100 back in favor of swimming only the 200 free on day 3 here. Instead, he’ll swim the 50 free individually today. He’ll only be doing the sprint free today, both in the relay and individually, since we won’t see him swimming backstroke on the medley,

There were a few individual scratches for this morning, but none that were expected to have a scoring impact for their teams. The closest scratch to scoring range was Louisville’s Zach Harting, who was the 18-seed in the 500 free coming into the meet.

Update 9:00 AM: There has been a re-seed of the 200 free relay with University of the Pacific no longer in the mix. Pacific was mistakenly entered with a qualifying standard but isn’t eligible to compete with no individuals invited. New heat sheets are coming soon.

Day 2 Prelims Scratches (top 24)

  • Men’s 200 Free Relay: N/A
  • Men’s 500 Free: #18 Zach Harting (Louisville)
  • Men’s 200 IM: #21 Mark Nikolaev (Grand Canyon), #23 Jacob Montague (Michigan),
  • Men’s 50 Free: N/A
  • Men’s 400 Medley Relay: Harvard, Iowa

To Dean or not to Dean? That is the only question.

Dean is serious on 50 finals qualification.

well, that and they can only swim him in 4 relays and aren’t likely to score without him… so they were going to scratch one relay somewhere.

Yeah, depends on how tapered out Lutz was at Ivies, he may not have been a net positive for the breaststroke leg. A lot easier to gut out a good 50 of stroke even on a retaper.

Lean mean Dean will take care of that 100 back record on the hundred split of the 200. No sense in going for it today

Montague scratching the IM… interesting, I would have thought he’d have a chance to score and Michigan’s lack of backstroker was enough to keep them out of the A final in the medley relay anyway…

Is Michigan setting up for another disappointing NCAA’s? 800 Free Relay did nothing and already a scratch. Bottom needs to figure this out.

I don’t know if “disappointing” is the right word, I’d say they will end up about where I thought they would, unless their sprinters have some more time to drop from Big Tens. Really, they are Georgia plus some sprinters.

Unless he is suddenly a 21-low/46-low, my point stands. Backstroke is FAST this year and if you can’t stay with the race at the beginning your breaststroker is going to be swamped on his last 25 by flyers diving in.
