2016 U.S. Olympic Trials: Day Four Roster Update

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS

Tonight was a night of redemption for Missy Franklin, who pushed through a very close race in the 200 free to touch 2nd overall to secure her spot on the Olympic roster. New Olympians continued to pave their way to Rio, playing into the trend of fresh talent making their way to Rio.

The 2nd place finishers aren’t guaranteed a spot on the team yet, because of a cap on team size. Only 26 men and 26 women are allowed on the team, which would be perfect if there were no relay swimmers, since there are 13 events with two individual spots for each. But, there are relay swimmers, so there is potential for there to be too many swimmers for the available spots.

However, it’s extremely unlikely for 26 different men to qualify for each unique spot on the team. Rather, there are instances where someone like Michael Phelps might qualify in two or three events, thus opening up more spots for people who finish second.

In all likelihood, enough swimmers will qualify in more than a single event, so all 2nd-place finishers in Omaha should make the team, too. Their spots just aren’t set in stone quite yet.

The top four finishers in the 100 and 200 free for men and women will automatically qualify for free relays.

Relay-only swimmers (typically 5th and 6th place finishers) are not guaranteed spots on the team, and roster caps could mean that the 6th place finisher in a 100 or 200 free final at Trials won’t make the team. Read more about selection processes here– the section on relay swimmer selection is 1.3.6.

Doing the math, with all the number of spots available on the team and looking that the world rankings, Plummer, Meili, Margalis, Baker, and Vollmer have already qualified.

David Plummer is already qualifed.
There were at least 7 guaranted spot for 2nd finished. Dwyer double up left 1 extra spot. We have 11 possibles (100 and 200 free are already qualified). That means you need to be the 8th best 2nd finished to guarantee your spot.
According to USA Swimming procedure, Plummer has better position in the World Ranking than Litherland, Miller and Shields, guaranteeing him be the 8th 2nd finished and his spot in the olympic roster.

Karl- Over Phelps’ time- should be 200 Fly, not 200 IM

All you would need is 4 guys and 4 girls to double up in 2 events.
The 4 relay swimmers in the medley relay are in anyway as individual winners.
2 of the 4X200 relay swimmers are in anyway, so that takes 2 to double up.
2 of the 4×100 relay swimmers are also in anyway, so that tales 2 more to double up. Totaling 4.
On the men’s side – Dwyer has already doubled up. Phelps is expected to triple, Cordes, Adrian, Murphy, Jaeger are all serious contenders to double up. That could make 7. Lochte, if he qualifies in the 200 IM would also be doubling up – by having an already punched ticket… Read more »

You need 4 spots going to those already qualified to secure all second place finishers.

You need 2 more spots to those already qualified to secure the 5th place freestylers.

You need 2 more from there to secure the sixth place freestylers.

But the 5th and 6th relay spots might not…which given the times maybe should not go regardless

Since there’s sadly no Maya Dirado and Melanie Margalis interview article yet, I’ll post the video here:

Is USA Swimming starting to get worried? Only 3 times as Top 1 in the world after day 4! Only 1 AR. It will be very hard to beat London’s 31medals/16 gold medal….
