2013 Men’s NCAA Championships: Day 1 Finals Point Movement

Before the meet started, we said that Cal had to basically make up about 70 points per day on Michigan to make this meet a dead-heat going into the final 400 free relay. On day one of the meet, the Golden Bears made up 64.5 points. Considering that day 1 has the fewest events of this meet, that means that we’re right on pace to have this meet easily in contention on the meet’s final day, despite the Wolverines’ early 29.5 point advantage.

Both teams have good days coming on day 2, and are expected to have big scoring days on Friday, but Michigan’s seed advantage is even bigger than the first day. Cal needs to make that up; really, they need to tie Michigan on day 2 points. That’s a lot of pressure, but with Tom Shields the favorite to win both the 100 fly and the 100 back, the chances are there for Cal.

Auburn ended up just ahead of seed coming in, which partially was due to some points for diving. USC’s +2 overall is pretty telling; even with the excitement of Vlad Morozov’s swims, they could only move up 2 points.

Texas crushed their seeds on the first day. Their 27 seeded turned into 72 actual. Florida, Arizona, Stanford (thanks in large part to diving), and Indiana also had big upward swings on the first day of this meet.
