While competing on day one of the 2023 Chinese Nationals, Pan Zhanle ripped a new Chinese national and Asian continental record in the men’s 100m freestyle.
The 18-year-old scorched a time of 47.22 to beat the field handily, getting to the wall nearly one second ahead of the competition. Wang Haoyu was tonight’s silver medalist in 48.15 while Yang Jintong and Chen Juner ounded out the top 3, tied in 48.94.
Zhanle opened in 22.96 and brought it home in 24.26 to produce the fastest swim of his life.
Entering this competition, the teen had been as quick as 47.65, a time he produced at the 2022 World Championships. That time tied the former Chinese record Ning Zetao put on the books in 2014.
The former Asian record stood at the 47.56 South Korea’s Hwang Sunwoo logged in the semi-final of the men’s 100m free at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Pan is now the 11th fastest men’s 100m freestyler of all time. His 47.22 record would have taken gold at the 2022 World Championships.
Pan now takes over the top spot in the season’s world rankings, grabbing the crown from current World Record holder David Popovici of Romania.

Wow, incredible swim! 47.22 is seriously fast. Remember that Popovici won World last year with “only” a 47.58. Even if this ends up being Pan’s season best, he’s a serious contender for everything up and including gold and Worlds this year.
