For the last 3 years, Hungary’s incredibly durable Katinka Hosszu has been piling up World, Continental, Championship, and National Records, but on Sunday, the final day of the 2015 European Short Course Championships, 18-year old Dalma Sebestyen clawed one back.
Sebestyen swam a 2:22.40 in the final of the women’s 200 short course meters breaststroke, which broke Hosszu’s old record of 2:22.43 done at last year’ Indian Ocean Meeting in Reunion.
Sebestyen split this race almost identically to the way Hosszu split hers. On Sunday, Sebestyen opened in 1:08.59, and in Hosszu’s old record, she opened in 1:08.58.
While for the older Katinka, this event is more of a way to work on her IM’s or to add more races during in-season training meets, Sebestyen’s path will have more of a focus on the stroke. She placed 5th at the Youth Olympic Games last year in long course in the 200 breaststroke.
There are now 10 individual Hungarian National Records that Hosszu does not hold, and this is one of just three in short course meters (along with the 400 free and the 1500 free).
