15 Members of Spanish National Team to Race at Catalonian Open

2018 Catalonian Senior-Junior Open

The 2018 Catalonian Senior-Junior Open Championships will feature 660 swimmers from 75 different clubs around the country, but none will receive more attention than the 15 members of the Spanish National Team who will start in the meet. That includes 2016 Olympic Champion Mireia Belmonte,

Belmonte will be swimming in her first serious long course meet since last year’s World Championships, where she won gold in the 200 fly and added silvers in the 1500 free and 400 IM. Belmonte did race one other long course meet, in December, but her times (4:48 in the 400 IM, 2:04 in the 200 free, 4:17 in the 400 free, etc.) were commensurate to the competition, which was mostly a team-focused event.

Belmonte will swim the 200/400/800 free, the 100/200 back, the 200 breast, and the 200 IM/400 IMs at the meet.

She’s one of 4 members of the country’s 8-swimmer World Championship team that will be present at the meet. Also on the women’s team is Jimena Pérez, who was 9th in the 1500 free (16:21.45) and 18th in the 800 free (8:41.41). The men’s team will also have two Worlds representatives: Joan Pons, who was a high of 10th in the 400 IM (4:16.27) at Worlds, and Miguel Duran, who was a high of 21st in the 400 free (3:51.28) at Worlds. Pérez, Pons, and Duran are 20, 21, and 22-years old, respectively.
