14-year-old Avery Daigle broke her own Louisiana State Record in the 50 meter freestyle as part of a six individual win effort at last weekend’s Louisiana Age Group State Championship meet.
Daigle’s output included a 26.28 in the 50 free in her last individual swim of the meet. That broke her own LSC Record for 13-14 girls of 26.73 that was set at last summer’s Zone Championship meet.
That times climbs her into a tie for 57th place all-time in the US 13-14 age group rankings, one spot behind Olympic gold medalist Simone Manuel. It ranks Daigle 7th this season in that event nationally among 13-14s.
That also gives Daigle her first U.S. Open time standard.
Daigle also won the 50 fly (27.86) in a Louisiana Open Record and led off the 200 medley relay in 30.67 in the 50 back, another Louisiana Open Record. In both cases, those are the fastest times swum by a swimmer registered in the Louisiana LSC. The 50 back broke the old record of 31.58 done by Rylee Simoneaux in 2023, and in the 50 fly it broke the record done by Elizabeth Benoit also in 2023.
Other individual wins for Daigle came in the 100 back (1:06.97), 200 free (2:11.10), 100 free (58.17), and 100 fly (1:04.61). She dropped just over a second in the 200 free, 1.3 seconds in the 100 free, and 1.5 seconds in the 100 fly.
Daigle swims for the Franco’s Fins swim team based out of Mandeville, Louisiana.
Samantha Johnston from the team champion Crawfish Aquatics matched Daigle with 6 event wins in the 11-12 age group, in spite of being only 11.
She won the 100 back (1:08.92), 50 fly (29.99), 100 free (1:02.49), 100 fly (1:07.68), 200 IM (2:39.01), and 50 back (31.97). All of those times were big drops, including 2.2 seconds in the 100 fly and 3.2 seconds in the 200 IM. She also swam on four winning relays.
That time in the 100 back ranks her 2nd nationally this season among 11-year-old girls behind only Kennedy Masten of Machine Aquatics in the DC Metro area (1:08.72); her time in the 50 back sneaks her into the top 100 US performers all-time in the 11-12 age group, in spite of only being 11.
Other Notable Performances
- Crawfish’s Willie Chapman won all six of his individual races in the 10 & under age group, including a 1:14.85 in the 100 back that took 1.39 seconds off his previous personal best.
- JJ Hoover from the Bulldog Aquatic Club won all six of his individual races, but the most notable among them were the 100 fly (57.37) and 200 fly (2:07.49). Those were drops of 3.0 and 4.0 seconds, respectively, and new Futures cuts for him.
- 12-year-old Eli Clavier from Crawfish Aquatics won the 800 free in 8:17.79, which knocked off about 40 seconds from his previous lifetime bests and ranks him 83rd all-time in US history in that age group.
